Well the first week of January is almost gone and I am already behind my new year's Internet marketing goals. I managed to create just over 68 pages of new content in the form of 17 new spyware removal tutorials. I could say I am listing them below for your benefit, but we all know I just want to get them indexed ;-)

My goal was to have 150 new pages of content by the end of the day tomorrow, but that is looking a little tough to these eyes tonight. I will make a more detailed post tomorrow after the final week one stats are in, but so far Google hasn't made a pass over those yet so they are not earning at the moment...

A few months ago I launched a blog about Nebraska politics hoping that the upcoming elections (national, state and local) would make for good traffic and a few bucks in advertising dollars. But everyone knows you need unique content to bring in the bucks.

I really like politics, but I don't have the time to sit down and write unique posts about candidates, policies and elections. I needed someone to write it for me, but no one will write the content at a price low enough for me to generate a profit with it online.

Hmmmm..... Where can I find a ton of great hand-written content that no one else is already publishing online.....

FREE Unique Content For My Blog

Instead of posting until my fingers bleed, I joined just about every business association in Nebraska and let them write the content for me. I needed to join these organizations anyway for my computer repair business, so this gave me a good reason to stop procrastinating and get the job done.

Most business organizations use email to send out alerts about upcoming votes, new candidates, or general policy statements. I started collecting these emails and republishing them on my Nebraska Pulse blog.

The traffic is pretty decent for a blog I literally invest 5 minutes a week on. But the real story is where that traffic is coming from and why people are clicking ads on the blog at $1.50-$1.90 a pop!

Their Egos Driving my Income

A lot of the posts that get traffic are about politicians themselves, or a politician's support of a policy or vote. The reported search terms indicate that I am literally making money off people searching for other people's names!

I imagine some of it is vanity searching by the subjects of my posts themselves. But if you were going to make money off of vanity, what could be better than a pool of politicians in a super-duper Republican state with tons of great contested primaries?

Champaign Anyone?

Now don't get me wrong - I made about $3.00 yesterday off that blog, so I am not exactly sipping Dom Pérignon as I click post. But $21 a week for about 5 minutes of work (just over $1,000 a year for 4.3 hours of work) is not bad.

The moral of the story is that content is KING and there are lots of brick and mortar offline sources with shake n' bake content that is not being published online somewhere else.

You can bet if an organization has membership and spends the time creating content their content must be interesting to someone out there. What resources do you have sitting right in front of you that you could be using to make money online?

I just turned 31 last November, and while that is certainly not an elderly age, some of life's wear and tear is starting to show on my body.

The latest example is the vision in my right eye. I was having trouble reading street signs at night unless I closed my right eye. I went in to have my eyes checked, and they found my right eye was a bit off.

I am going to be spending a LOT of time in front of a computer screen this week, and the last thing I need is a headache from my eyes. I went to my local WalMart Vision Center and spent some time scoping out some new specs. I bought a pair, but which one do you think it was?

Ok, everyone makes new years' resolutions, and most people rarely keep them. The same is true for making money online. One of the biggest reasons that people fail when they try to make money online is is because they set unrealistic expectations for their income.

This year I have decided to set some pretty reasonable resolutions for my online marketing efforts, and I am going to share them with you. My hope is that my readers can help hold my feet to the fire when push comes to shove, and that people who follow my blog will be able to learn from my efforts and use that knowledge to improve their own online incomes.

Right now my online marketing efforts are separated into four main categories:

  • Google AdSense
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Blogging
  • One Big Project

I have never been a big fan for those who brag about their earnings (John Chow's monthly earnings report for example) but I am going to lay out my plans for each section, tell you how I did in each category this year, and then my goals for 2008 and how I plan to reach them.

Google AdSense

I really slacked off on AdSense this year. In 2006 I was earning more than $100 a day, but this year I averaged only $400 a month. The main reason for the drop off was because I stopped creating content.

I was really dominant in the anti-spyware niche and the computer tutorial niche, but if you stop making content new infections and problems come along to replace the old ones and before you know it traffic is down by 10K visitors a month and money is WAY down.

My goal for 2008 is to get back up to $100 a day on average, which would be $3,100 a month or $37,200 a year. I suspect that this will be a sloping curve upward as I create a LOT of content in January and February and then come down to a more sustainable, consistent level. I plan on creating more than 150 pages of content the first week of January alone.

Affiliate Marketing

I plan on replicating the success I forged with Joel Comm's Secret Classroom product in 2008. This year almost all of my affiliate income came from my effort to promote that DVD set. A few other smaller efforts netted me a few hundred dollars, but the grand total for this year was just under $5,000 in income. Of course there were expenses as well, but this is about income growth right now and not degrees of profitability.

In 2008 I want to triple that income to $15,000. I believe that is a reasonable goal if I launch myself heavily into one new affiliate program each month. That means that each program would have to earn a mere $416 over the course of the year. I have a plan to make it happen in a scalable and sustainable way (which you will hear more about when it is ready) that will probably be duplicated by others if it works.

Blogging

This is by far the most elusive revenue stream I have ever pursued. Blogs are great for leveraging other revenue streams like AdSense, or affiliate promotions, but to make money off of a blog its self as a stand-alone product is much more challenging.

This year I earned a mere $180 directly from my blog. Don't get me wrong - my blog was an invaluable tool to my AdSense income and affiliate efforts, but it's become pretty clear that if I want to make money off this blog, I am going to have to make some changes.

In 2008 I want to find a way to earn $100 a month from my blog. I know that sounds trivial, especially when you consider that one person maintaining a blog for one hour a day at $25 an hour needs to make over $700 a month just to break even.

But I don't want to set an unrealistic goal for myself, and knowing that my blog is a useful instrument in my other online marketing efforts, I am happy going from an average of $15 a month to $100 a month.

One Big Project

I always seem to end up with one Manhattan-style project every year that is a little bit out there. in 2007 it was the Schrock Desk, and the 2008 idea is already bulbing to the surface. This one is really going to challenge me to combine my online and offline knowledge and contacts in a new and innovative way. I know it sucks that I won't tell you more now, bu trust me if I pull this off you will be so sick of hearing about it...

Overall Goals

If you combine all of my 2007 internet marketing income (which does not include the Schrock Desk income that is earned by my staff) I earned a meager $10,000 in income.

If you combine all of my goals for 2008 and assume I hit my marks, I should earn just under $53,000. With all things considered, that is a HUGE annual increase that I should be able to attain most of that without a significant increase in expenses.

The Reports

Every month I am going to report to you to show how I am doing in each category compared to my overall goals.

The point is not to brag about how hot I am or anything... The point is to inspire others by giving an example of a guy who sets a reasonable plan and executes. If I can make more than $57,000 in 2008 on the internet you can too. I'll show you how I am going to try and do it as the year goes on. What are your new years' income resolutions?

My wife made this movie for the grandparents and we screened it before Christmas dinner yesterday. It is just amazing how fast kids grow. Its like you don't even realize it is happening until you look back a year and see the stark differences.

This is a video of my son Jacob and his cousin Olivia. They go from little babies last Christmas to walking talking play machines this year.

Take the time to look back on where your kids have been and how they have grown. Its a cliche, but they really do grow up sooo fast.

This morning my wife sent me to the gas station to grab a couple bags of ice for the throng of family we will be entertaining over the next couple days.

I pulled my 16-month old son Jacob away from the ton of toys he unwrapped that morning, bundled him up and headed off to accomplish our Christmas Eve mission.

We pulled up at the gas station a few minutes later when a woman tapped on the passenger-side window of the minivan. She was dressed in a heavy coat that was well worn and her hair was a mess. I rolled the window down a couple inches to see what she needed.

"Sir," she said, "please help me. My car ran out of gas on 16th Street and I only have $1.00. I have to get to my family's place for Christmas. Do you have any money you can spare for gas? Anything will help."

My B.S. meter immediately spiked, but it was Christmas Eve, and what if she was telling the truth? There have been a couple of times in my life when the kindness of a stranger has made all of the difference in the world to me. I only had $6.00 cash, which would have bought 2 gallons of gas at best. The First Noel started playing over my XM radio, and Jacob was alternating between my face and the face of this strange woman with great interest.

I decided what the heck. It's $6.00 on Christmas Eve, and if she is telling the truth and she gets home to her family maybe she will look back on this moment and help someone else in their time of need.

I pulled the $6.00 out of my wallet and handed it through the 2" opening. She thanked me, turned away and started walking toward the corner of the building.

I thought that the direction she was walking was a bit odd, because there were no streets there that led back to 16th Street. Part of me wondered if I should have offered her a ride back to her car.

Just as I finished that thought, a rusty,multi-colored, four door compact car that might have been a Honda at one time in its life, pulled away from around the corner with the "out of gas" girl in the passenger's seat.

Maybe her friend gave her a ride, I thought... But then they went to the corner and turned away from 16th Street. Part of me was put off that I had fallen for the old, "my car is out of gas" line, but another part of me looked back at my son and hoped that he would be trusting enough to fall for the same line someday.

As I bought my $4.00 of ice on a credit card, I thought there will always be people that want to scam the system, steal from others, click on their own ads, or whatever makes a quick buck.

I just hope there is always someone who is willing to trust one more time because maybe... just maybe... that girl was taking the long way back to 16th Street.

Merry Christmas, and I hope you have a wonderful holiday with those you care about.

When you build a new website there are two ways to convince search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN to rank you in a high position in the search results for a particular term.

But what is more important? A properly constructed and SEO'd page, or a horde of backlinks "voting" for your website?

The Experiment

About 10 days ago I made a mistake that allowed me to find out the hard way. I had designed an optimized website at www.nextinternetmilionairedvd.com and then used a number of techniques (including this $1,800 contest) to build lots of backlinks.

The results of my efforts placed that URL in the #1 search result for the term "Secret Classroom" - even ahead of Joel Comm's www.secretclassroom.com. Until I messed it all up.....

At the same time I was working on the nextinternetmillionairedvd.com website, I was also working on a church website for a client. I accidentally uploaded the church's index page over the top of the nextinternetmillionairedvd.com index page and left it there for an entire day before I noticed!

The Result

Of course, that was the one day that Google decided to re-index the page, and BOOM, just like that I dropped from #1 to #580 in the search results.

As soon as I noticed my mistake, I immediately changed the page back and watched eagerly for Google to come back for a second pass. A day later G did, and now I come in at an annoying #8.

The Conclusion

So the moral of the story is that page construction and SEO techniques can help get your page ranked highly at the onset, and keep it near the top. Backlinks can help push you up higher and higher - all the way to number one over time.

But content is still king, and if G thinks your page is not related to the search term, you won't rank. Its that simple.

Focus on your content and your SEO techniques, and once you have done everything you can with that then start working on backlinks. You can have all of the backlinks in the world, but if you don't have a good foundation in the search engines, you won't get ranked anywere near the top spot.

From time to time people ask me if its is absolutely necessary that a URL contain keywords that users will likely search for.

The answer is no, they are not absolutely critical. However keywords in your URL can give you a huge and immediate boost into the search results for your desired search term.

Here is an example. When I was competing in Joel Comm's affiliate program to move copies of his Secret Classroom product, I reserved two domains - nextinternetmillionairedvd.com and secretclassroomoffer.com.

I updated the nextinternetmillionairedvd website daily and generated a TON of backlinks all over the web to ensure a high search engine placement. As of today, it is ranked #2 for the term Secret Classroom in Google (right behind www.secretclassroom.com).

While the other website was updated at times as well, far less effort was put into building backlinks and tweaking its meta content. The URL obviously has the keywords Secret Classroom in it, and look where that caused the search engine rankings to end up:

www.secretclassroomoffer.com

This URL is ranked #6 in the results for secret classroom (it went as high as #4). This site is mostly images and has very little machine readable content. It is there mostly because it has keywords in its URL.

www.secretclassroom.nextinternetmillionairedvd.com

While the root domain nextinternetmillionairedvd.com is ranked second, I established a subdomain on that URL called secretclassroom. The content on the subdomain is EXACTLY THE SAME as the content in the root domain, yet it comes in at #9 in the search results!

A REALLY Long URL

Coming in at #19 is secretclassroom.nextinternetmillionairedvd.com/ secretclassroom_kris_jones.php. Boy that's a mouthful!

Note the repeated words secret classroom in the URL. I have now placed three times in the top 20 search results with three pages from a site that only has 14 total pages. The content on two of these pages is identical, and the third was a content scrape from an online bio of Kris Jones from PepperjamSearch.

Admittedly, # 9 and #19 are not exactly stellar search results. But imagine if I would have put the same backlink effort into www.secretclassroomoffer.com as I did into the nextinternetmillionairedvd.com website. Having those keywords might have even been enough to elevate me up over the real Secret Classroom website by Joel Comm!

The moral of the story is that while you can achieve stellar results without having keywords in your URLs, adding keywords can give you an instant edge that your competition will have to work hard to overcome.

If you are about to reserve a URL, I suggest you find a way to include your keywords if at all possible.

If you already have a URL with content and search engine results you don't want to abandon, add keywords to the names of your future pages and add a subdomain that contains your keywords as well if possible.

A lot of you supported me on the Next Internet Millionaire reality show, and even though I was the second runner up I had an awesome opportunity to learn from some amazing internet marketing gurus in the Secret Classroom.

And I was a VERY good student.  So good in fact that I am taking two of my former guru instructors, Marlon Sanders and Armand Morin to the woodshed in Joel Comm’s Secret Classroom Affiliate Program!

Here is what I learned and how I am beating some of the best internet marketers in the world.

Be a Marketing Ninja, not a Marketing Thug.

Marlon Sanders taught me the theory behind something I have instinctively known in the past.  He said that every strength has an accompanying weakness. If you are up against a superior competitor, you should not attack their strength. You want to attack the weakness that accompanies their strength.

For example, is you are going up against Best Buy trying to sell computers, don’t open a super store staffed with a moderately skilled sales and support staff and a massive selection of PCs.

Instead sell high quality computers that are custom designed for the user’s needs and provide an award-winning service and support plan to back it up. By attacking the weakness within their strength, you negate Best Buy’s competitive advantage.

The More Broke You are the Better Your Image Needs to Be

Sites like Amazon, or Google, or YouTube are multi-million dollar websites with logos that are recognized by visitors and people have come to trust them.

Armand Morin explained to me that there is no accident in the fact you can probably visualize the logos of each of the above companies in your mind right now.

Consequently when one of these websites wants you to take an action, whether it is buying a book or uploading a video, you are more likely to take that action because you trust you trust the name and the logo.

The greatest cost you incur in business is getting a customer for the first time.  Secondary sales to the same customer should be a cakewalk if you have branded properly and your customer recognizes you the next time you come knocking.

If a Picture is 1,000 Words, What’s a Video Worth?

Using a video to drive traffic to your website is an art form, and if you master it you will have an extremely effective tool that most people overlook.

Anyone can post a backlink in a couple seconds.  It’s no biggie to get into Google Search.  But making a video takes some time and some talent.  Most people don’t know how to drive traffic with videos, so they don’t mess with it at all.

Mike Koenigs Mike taught me how to produce a video, get it in front of eyeballs, and then get those eyeballs to a website. He taught me how to use videos to drive traffic just like a search engine does, and this was a huge component that propelled me above the other guru marketers.

He explained that people will tolerate bad video to a point, but if your audio is bad, you won’t get past the first 2 seconds. If you are going to spend money on equipment, buy a good microphone first, and then get a good camera.

Then there was the $30 must-have lighting rig you can make from stuff at Home Depot that will light up your whole video set.  More awesome knowledge that will make your videos look awesome and give you an edge over the few others who throw some videos online.

The Long Tail is a Blogger's Best Traffic Friend

Dave Taylor explained that if you properly construct a post with content people want, you will reap a small amount of traffic on that post indefinitely into the future as people seek out what they want.
Eventually the long tail approach to blogging will generate lots of small traffic pulls that add up to one powerful web presence.

You can search for just about anything online and find one of Dave Taylor’s pages somewhere in the results.

A Symphony of Guru Butt-Kicking

Rather than taking one guru’s system exclusively, I combined multiple methods from the Secret Classroom to make a marketing machine that was more powerful than any of my instructors by themselves.
I started with three websites all designed to promote the same product. More sites means more opportunities to claim spots in the top 10 search results and force other sites downward.

I moved fast to get my sites indexed before the pre-launch, and www.nextinternetmillionairedvd.com was my flagship website.

Following Marlon’s advice, I needed to attack a weakness in the Secret Classroom juggernaut. Rather than playing the same “I set a cookie on your PC” referral game, I attacked the Secret Classroom on price by offering a rebate.

Joel is offering a $200 affiliate commission for every Secret Classroom set I sell, so I offered a $100 rebate for anyone who buys through my websites. I mean seriously, if you were planning on buying the set anyway, why not save the $100, right?

As soon as I learned that the name of the DVD set would be the Secret Classroom, I used the basic SEO/SEM techniques to grab a #2 spot in Google for my nextinternetmillionairedvd.com website.

Next I hired a coder to make me an email submission form that allowed me to collect names and email addresses on the websites and store them in a database. I managed to collect over 170 leads of people who were interested in the discount offer.

I then produced 12 Secret Classroom sample videos (1 for each instructor) made from video screen captures and audio from Next Internet Millionaire episodes. I used Mike’s techniques to write titles, descriptions, URLs and bottom third messages that would perform. I uploaded those to every single video sharing site on planet earth.

I then held almost all of the top spots in Google, Yahoo, and YouTube video searches for the term secret classroom. Next, it was time to attack Blog Search.

I started posting on my blog multiple times a day using Dave Taylor’s long tail advice. While my competition was playing cookie wars driving traffic through their affiliate links, I was collecting email addresses and building relationships.

Then on December 5 Joel pulled the trigger. I email blasted my list, published a blog post, placed a Google AdWords ad, and uploaded my post-launch landing pages.

When the dust settled, I was Joel’s #1 affiliate after day 1, and I held that spot all the way to the end of his affiliate contest on day 7. I was way out ahead of Marlon Sanders as well as Armand Morin – the very gurus who educated me in the Secret Classroom.

So many people try internet marketing and fail because they are looking for a system that works 100% of the time in a turn-key style. The truth is that while all of the gurus that instructed me had AWESOME techniques, those techniques are simply tools. Like any tool, these tactics are suited for various environments and tasks. Mastering multiple tools and then selecting the right tool at the right time is what makes all the difference.

Blog Blaster, Feed Blaster, Instant Booster, e-Trinity Internet Marketing, and Sebastain Foss (if that is even a real person) represent some of the lowest members of the internet marketing food chain. Right below pond scum in my opinion. Here's why.

It doesn't happen every day, but I just got scammed by an internet marketer last week.

I have been talking to more and more "old school" internet marketers lately, which means I am getting added to their mailing lists as well.

I received an email message about a product called Blog Blaster that promised 2 million blog backlinks that come from opt-in blogs all over the net.

How would you like 2 Million Sites linking to your ad ?
Weblog or blog population is exploding around the world, resembling the growth of e-mail users in the 1990s.
Post your ads where people read them!
- What if you could place your ad on all these sites ?
Right, that would mean you would have millions of sites linking to your ad.
For Full Details Please read the attached .html file

It sounded too good to be true, and of course it was. But here is how they tricked me into sending over my $49.99:

Blog Blaster Scam Screenshot

Their sales letter promised that this would be a 100% spam-free. Opt-in advertising systems are awesome, so I though I had stumbled onto something that could give my blog an edge on the web. I eagerly sent my PayPal $49.99 and downloaded the Blog Blaster software.

To their credit, the software was very intuitive and easy to use. The problem is that it IS a spam program and it DOESN'T work. Here is how I know:

I did a search using their software for "Thor Schrock's Technology Blog" which is an active Google search term. I FOUND my OWN BLOG in their list of opt-in blogs and of course, I never opted in.

Blog Blaster Scam Screenshot

I decided to see exactly what happened when I blasted my own blog through Blog Blaster's so called opt-in blog advertising service. NOTHING happened. Not even a spam comment.

But it seems that other bloggers are very familiar with Blog Blaster and know how it works. I emailed a few of the other bloggers that showed up in the list of "found blogs" to see if they might have opted in. Two bloggers responded. Here is what they said.

Kevin OKeefe from www.lexblog.comreplied saying:

Thor -
You sent a note about blog blast through the contact form on our site. Don't know anything about so not sure I can help you.
- Kevin

Brian Turner of http://www.britecorp.co.uk replied to my email saying:

Blog blast is just a comment spam application – they blast lots of blogs with comment spam, in the hope that some of these will automatically publish the spam.

Mostly it’s just filtered by anti-spam tools like Akismet.

The minority that are published usually have nofollow on the links, which makes them useless for ranking on Google.

It’s also been suggested by Akismet could be hosted on Google servers, and therefore domains promoted via blog blaster could be on a fast track to being banned from the search index.

So, overall, blogblaster is probably not a worthwhile investment.

Hope that helps.

Obviously, no one opted into this "advertising service". Once I realized I was was scammed, I filed a PayPal charge back, and then starting looking into how I was taken in by such a scammer.

I even fired off a "Blast" to my own blog to see what happened, and sure enough.... crickets... Not a thing - not even a askimet spam comment.

Those of you who read my blog regularly know that I was able to use the knowledge I learned in Joel Comm's Secret Classroom to really propel myself to a profitable online presence.

One of the things I did to accomplish that was offer my personal contact information so that people who had been burnt by people like those at Blog Blast in the past would be willing to trust me.

When I looked back at the emails I received, I noticed that the e-Trinity emails came in on the rebate address I set up for my Secret Classroom program and posted on my Secret Classroom sales letter.

e-Trinity Internet Marketing scrapped my email address from my website and then sent me unsolicited email promoting their product!

So here we have a company who calls themselves a legitimate internet marketing company who scrapes email addresses for their list off the web, lies on their sales letter, offers a product that is supposed to spam blogs, but actually doesn't work at all - even as a spamming program.

After I realized I had become one of the many internet marketing victims on the web, I immediately "unsubscribed" from their evil spammer list.

Since I "unsubscribed" I have received the following emails:

More and more people are subscribing to feeds every day and there are millions who are already subscribed.
Thus, your ad will reach a very broad range of potential customers with each use of Feed Blaster!

Feed Blaster is the first & only submitter that can submit your ads to thousands of feeds within a few minutes! Post your ads where people read them!

- What if you could place your ad into all these feeds ?
Right, that would mean you would have millions of sites
linking to your ad - and millions of users reading your message within
minutes - and my idea actually works

For Full details please read the attached .html file

What a SCAM! if you post to people's blogs with a spamming service, your links will show up in their comment feeds. The trouble is that this is a dishonest way of advertising and even worse - since their blog blaster program doesn't work, this won't work either!

P.S. But wait there's more! (like that sales letter technique?)

I also received this email after unsubscribing!

Can you afford to lose 300,000 potential customers per year ?
How would You like to divert 1000s of fresh, new visitors daily to Your web site or affiliate web site from Google, Yahoo, MSN and others At $0 cost to you...?
...iNSTANT BOOSTER diverts 1000s of fresh, new visitors daily to Your web site or affiliate web site from Google, Yahoo, MSN and others at $0 cost to you!
...No matter what you are selling or offering -
INTSANT BOOSTER will pull in hordes of potential customers to your website - instantly!

For full details please read the attached .html file

I am done with these fools. I did a Google search before I purchased to see if this was a scam, and found nothing. Something tells me that is about to change.

It's no secret that video can transform what would otherwise be a bland sales letter, web page, or blog into a dynamic and entertaining communication tool.

But have you ever considered that your online videos can actually drive traffic to your website rather than just acting as added value content?

By labeling your videos with a bottom third, carefully wording your video titles, and tweaking your descriptions a bit, YouTube and other video sharing sites can become traffic magnets that send targeted leads to your website who WANT to convert into clicks and/or sales.

The question is with so many people posting videos for the most competitive search terms, how can you get your video to rank high enough for anyone to notice your message?

The answer is MUCH easier than you think!

Why You Want Your Video
Ranked in YouTube

Well for one thing, you put time into shooting the video, producing it, and uploading it. If no one is watching it you have wasted your time.

If people search for a term and find your video it is much more likely that the person who did the search can be transformed into a targeted lead.

The Magic of the Bottom Third

When you produce your video, use your video editing software to place a URL or other message across the bottom 1/3 of your video.

You have a mere 2 seconds to capture a person's attention, so make sure your bottom third starts right away and there is no boring title screen that preceeds the video. Get right to it and be enertaining in the first 2 seconds.

After the first 2 seconds, you have to recaptue the viewers attention again every ten seconds at a minimum. Try to keep your video under 2 minutes if possible, but never more than 3.

The longer you can keep your viewer's eyes plastered to their computer screen, the longer they will be exposed to your bottom third message as well. Feel free to keep things interesting by changing the bottom third from time to time throughut the video, but the main concept or message should always remain the same.

How to Write Effective
Titles, Descriptions, and Tags

The easiest way to ensure people watch your video is to get it ranked for the terms you expect people to be searching for. If you are making a video about Netflix for example, you should have the word Netflix in your title, description, and your video tags.

You should try to make the first 2 words of your title be your primary keyword or words. For two videos that YouTube would normally rank identically, the title "Netflix is the Service I Love" will always beat "I Love the Netflix Sevice".

If your goal is to drive traffic to your website from your video, make the first line of your description a URL.

For example, write your description like this:

http://www.myurl.com
I really love getting my videos ranked on YouTube because I get a ton of traffic from it. Watch to see why.

When people are watching your video on YouTube, they can click on the URL and have a look at your website as long as you use the http://www link structure.

Make sure that the ONE keyword that is most important to your video (the ONE word that people will be searching for) is the very first word in your Title and your tags. This is important and will help push your video up over the top of a similar video even if it has more views.

Make More Than One Video

When you are trying to get your point across with video, I recommend having one flagship video that will get all of the attention when you link to it from blogs, websites, etc.

Then while you are in your video editing software, make use of some of your extra clips to make different movies that deliver the same message.

Go online and find other videos that are within your niche that are getting views, and upload your video as a video response. Typically the owner of the video you are responding to will have the ability to accept or reject your video response.

Keep in mind that you can only use each mini-video as a response to one other video, so choose your target wisely. Your video response will then appear in a thumbnail just below the original video that is already popular. You are in effect piggybacking on someone else's popularity - if they will let you.

One last word of advice... As popular as YouTube is, it is not the ONLY video sharing website on the net. Before you put all of your eggs in the YouTube basket, do a video search in the three major search engines to see what video websites are indexed frequently for your niche.

Upload your video to those sites at least. As a general rule, the more places you upload your video to, the more attention it will get. Attention means traffic, and if you are doing your job, you should be able to convert that traffic into sales.

It's time someone told the truth about making money online.

If you are like me, you are starting to see through all the so-called "push-button" solutions. There are many excellent systems for making money online available.

Yes, there is a LOT of money to be made online.

But the one thing that people don't want you to talk about is the four letter word that makes people scurry and hide.

No, not THAT word.

The word is...

WORK

Running an online business is hard work. There is no way around it. That's the facts, Jack. BUT, we're not talking about the same kind of work that you do when you have a 9-5 job that demands every last ounce of your energy.

On the contrary, I've found that making money online is much easier than any other way I know of.

But you have to know what to do!

I'm sure you remember hearing about Joel Comm's reality show, "The Next Internet Millionaire." This groundbreaking show took Internet marketing to a whole new level with it's high production values and top-notch content.

During the show, the fortunate twelve contestants were privileged to learn from Internet millionaires such as Mark Joyner, Armand Morin, Jeff Walker, Marlon Sanders, Mike Filsaime and Rich Schefren.

If you watched the show, you only got to see a few minutes of each of the twelve teachers.

That's why I am very excited to tell you what Joel Comm is doing on Wednesday, December 5th at 10 am EST.

For the first time ever, Joel is making the COMPLETE teaching from The Next Internet Millionaire available in a home-study course that contains everything you need to know to truly succeed online!

Secret Classroom

The material in this course has changed the lives of all twelve contestants, with several of them already having successful 5-figure product launches!

There are several "seminar-based" products available, but none of them have so many superstars of Internet marketing on hand to teach their greatest secrets and strategies purely so others can succeed online. There was absolutely NO pitching during these sessions.

Now you can't get "The Secret Classroom" until Wed, December 5th. And even then, there will be many that will not get in because Joel is limiting the number of copies available.

But you CAN enter to WIN of two complete sets that Joel is giving away the day before the product launch!

How do you enter?

Easy!

Simply follow this link...

Secret Classroom Business Development

Once registered, you will have access to a secret member's blog where Joel has posted "sneak peek" video clips to give you a taste of the incredible content that awaits you in The Secret Classroom.

Simply comment on any or all of the video clips by watching them and telling Joel how you can use the information presented to grow your online business! The more clips you comment on, the better your chances of winning a free copy of The Secret Classroom!

I hope you get a chance to check out the sneak peek videos as there is some powerful stuff that Joel is giving you free access to.

Building an online business is hard work. You already know that.

The Real Marketing Deal

You've purchased ebooks, you've downloaded software tools, perhaps you've even invested in seminars.

You've tried to apply what you have learned, but it seems like there are just too many pieces for you to put together.

You want to succeed with your Internet business, but so far nothing is happening.

That all changes today!

What you are about to see is quite possibly the world's "magnum opus" on Internet marketing-- the greatest education ever offered.

Let me explain...

This fall, Joel Comm made history by producing the world's very first competitive reality show, "The Next Internet Millionaire".

This groundbreaking show took Internet marketing to a whole new level with it's high production values and top-notch content.

During the show, the twelve contestants were privileged to learn from Internet millionaires such as Mark Joyner, Armand Morin, Jeff Walker, Marlon Sanders, Mike Filsaime, Perry Marshall, Brad Fallon and Rich Schefren.

If you watched the show, you only got to see a FEW MINUTES of each of the twelve teachers. The nuggets from the show have inspired people in their businesses, but most viewers have been asking to see more of the real secrets revealed.

That's why I am very excited to tell you how Joel wants to help you with your internet business so that you can get on the road to being the next Internet millionaire!

For the first time ever, Joel is making the COMPLETE teaching from The Next Internet Millionaire available in a home-study course that contains everything you need to know to truly succeed online!

Secret Classroom Back Stage Pass

The material in this course has changed the lives of all twelve contestants, with several of them already having successful five-figure product launches!

In the past, there have been several "seminar-based" products available from various marketers, but none of them can compare to the Secret Classroom.

Never before have so many superstars of Internet marketing been assembled teach their greatest secrets and strategies PURELY so others can succeed online. There was absolutely NO pitching or selling during these sessions.

You won't find this kind of teaching anywhere else, so I encourage you to check it out at:

The Secret Classroom

After taking a look at what is in The Secret Classroom, I have no doubt that this will go down in history as THE definitive course on Internet marketing.

I suspect that these will sell out quickly and the price will go up over the next few days, so I recommend that you hurry and grab your copy of The Secret Classroom right away!

The Secret Classroom DVD launch is less than two days away, and there is already talk of shortages and price increases almost immediately after the launch.

Joel Comm was nice enough to give me a sneak peek at the sales letter that will go up on the Secret Classroom website on Wenesday moring at 10:00 AM EST on the condition I do not link to it yet.

I have to say the sales letter is a knockout, but what stunned me more than anything was that the price of the DVD set will begin increasing IMMEDIATELY after the launch. In fact a mere three days after the launch the price will reach its permanent level (yet to be disclosed).

A source I have close to Joel (at least one evening at a seminar) said that the number $1,000 slipped across his lips, but that is unconfirmed.

Nevertheless, if you are planning on picking up a copy of the DVD set, you had better reserve your copy ahead of time. If you don't you might fond yourself on an expensive backorder ist as the price climbs.

You can reserve your copy at http://www.nextinternetmillionairedvd.com and even save $100 to boot! That brings the price of the set down from $497 to $397, but it is only good on the day of the launch - December 5th and while supplies last!

**EVIL WARNING** If you don't like dabbling in the grey area of marketing, don't read this post.

Anyone who is my friend on MySpace (feel free to add me) knows that I need to get in there more often and keep up with all of the comments, bulletins, friend requests and spam.

I went looking for a product that would help me maintain the three MySpace presences I am involved with without having to manually do everything. I came across a product called MySpace FriendBlasterPro by www.addnewfriends.com.

It really wasn't when I was looking for, but I immediately saw a ton of features that could give me a marketing boost within MySpace as well as in the lesser search engines (Yahoo & MSN) that eat MySpace content up.

Free Trial Was Awesome!

The cool thing is that the program offers you a free trial, so I installed it (spyware free BTW), created a MySpace profile and sent out 50 friend requests. Within a few hours, I had 12 new friends on my fake profile. I thought WOW and I bought the program for a mere $65 (seriously, that is less than what a good dinner for two would cost at Red Lobster and it is going to make me TONS money). Let me show you how.

A friend of mine once said just focus on generating traffic. Once you have the traffic there will be tons of ways to monetize it. So the approach I took with FriendBlasterPro was, how can I use MySpace profiles packed with friends to generate traffic for my websites?

Why Do People Add Mysterious
MySpace Friends to their Profiles?

MySpace is addictive for some users. People are enticed by the idea that others are interested in them and what is going on in their lives. The people who WANT a lot of friends for whatever reason are the ones that will approve mass friend requests.

Don't worry about the people who do not accept your friend request. These are probably people who would not respond well to future advertising messages anyway unless they were catered directly to them. You don't have time for that on a mass scale, so the best thing you can hope for is that they don't mark your request as spam.

Why do You Want a Profile With a Ton of Friends?

There is no real value to having MySpace friends in an of themselves unless you are one of the compulsive people I mentioned above. What IS valuable is the marketing messages you can place in front of your new-found friends once they have accepted you into their fold.

You can use the standard tried and true bulletin posting and/or commenting (both are supported in Friend Blaster Pro for automated use). Or you can get a bit more creative and watch your earnings balloon!

Create Dynamic MySpace Comments

The fastest way for some to mark you as an evil spammer on MySpace is to start posting big 'ol graphic ads as comments. So most marketers try to keep in good graces by posting much less effective text based comments that have a little promo message in them of some sort.

But what if you could not only post comments WITH graphics in people's MySpace profiles but also get a backlink each time AND change the image whenever you want?

It's easy! Just upload a 1 px by 1px transparent image to your server and then add that image to your MySpace comment. Make the image a link with a border of 0 to get a freebie backlink that will boost your rankings in MSN and Yahoo (but usually not Google).

Almost everyone will approve your benign, add-free comment. Then, at a moment of your choice, simply change the image on your server from the transparent little dot to an image of your choice. Then when their MySpace pages load, they will suddenly start pulling your ad image and the users can delete your comment if they want, but it is much more difficult to mark a comment as spam after it has been approved.

Some Pointers When Using FriendBlasterPro

As easy as FriendBlasterPro makes social networking, there is a constant battle between your marketing efforts and the MySpace spam police. (Seriously, let's face it. If you are doing this you are spamming MySpace)

If you are not careful with how you do things, you will get your account banned lose all of the friends, comments, blog posts, or anything else you put into it - especially your time.

Here are a few tips on avoiding the MySpace Spam cops and keeping your accounts in good standing.

  1. Less is more. Rather than blasting one of your fake profiles out to 400 people a day, create a bunch of profiles and then use friend Blaster Pro's request chaining feature to send NO MORE THAN 50 friend requests from each account per day.

Even sending 55 requests a day can get you banned. 50 is the magic number as of right now. Don't get greedy or you will lose it all.

  2. Spend some time on your profiles. The content of your profile is directly related to how many people will add you as a friend when you ask. Don't just create a blank profile with no pictures and no content and expect success.

I don't like making Myspace profiles because it is so time consuming. There are tons of people in online marketplaces or forums who will build these profiles for you. MySpace doesn't really care about the IP address e new accounts come from, so don't sweat that.

I would suggest you have at least three pictures in your profile (all of the same person), stick with a female profile (they are far more successful than male profiles), make a blog post or two, and set a mood icon.

Doing these things on every profile you create will help convince people that your profile is real, and second, it will instantly eliminate the people who make profiles online with automated software. You want hand-made profiles if you can get them. I paid $80 for 30 hand-made Myspace profiles. It's not that expensive.

  3. Check for people who want to add your fake profile. It might amaze you to find that as you gain more friends, other real people online will start sending your fake profile friend requests! Friend Blaster Pro has an "accept all" feature and I would suggest you use it.
  4. THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT TIP! When you use FriendBlasterPro to harvest profiles from Myspace to send friend requests to you will get 3,000 results. Don't start sending friend requests yet because you are wasting your time!

Over 40% of the profiles you harvest are bogus in themselves. These people will not check or approve comments, will not answer friend requests in many cases, and if they do, they usually flub up and get banned by MySpace anyway.

After you harvest a new list of 3000 profiles, let it age between 24-48 hours. FriendBlasterPro will save the list if you exit the program so you can use it later. This gives the MySpace cops time to weed out the idiots, catch some of the more slick people, and best of all, increase your odds of only sending requests to real people.

This reduces the number of requests you will send which lowers your spammer profile. You will actually get more, and better quality friends by aging your list. I know, it doesn't make sense to get more by not doing anything for 2 days, but trust me on this one.

The bottom line is that if you are patient and steady you can add over 20,000 friends in a single week. Then what you do with them is your business, but the method I mentioned above is an awesome way to push a site you are promoting to the top of MSN and Yahoo search. Granted, they are only 30% of all search traffic, but that 30% can be some very easy money.

Check out the free trial if nothing else and add a few new friends to one of your existing MySpace profiles.

Sorry this has become such a production, but I have switched themes a couple times in the past and I really want to get it right this time.

Here's a quick update of what I have done so far, what I need to do, and what you can do to earn $25 via PayPal for helping me out.

Progress Report

1) Plugins

  • I have installed the DoFollow Plugin (feel free to make a comment and get a free backlink)
  • I have installed the Sexy Comments plugin (shows avatars in comments and formats them in a forum-like style - I also modified the CSS to make the text slightly easier to read)
  • I have installed the AdMan plugin (to earn the blogs $1.58 per day average)
  • I have installed the All-in-One SEO Pack Plugin
  • I have installed the Google Sitemaps Plugin
  • I have installed the Subscribe to Comments plugin

2) Blogroll

  • I have Added a couple of my most frequent readers to my blogroll. Let me know if I forgot anyone.

3) Header

  • I removed the text name and description of my blog from the top of the page to recover some top-fold space.

4) Content

  • I will begin generating actual, relevant content again with my post tomorrow - theme ready or not.

To Do List

  1. New Header Coming Soon!

I am working on getting a new header image done to replace my piddle dog header that came with the default template... Although the little guy is starting to grow on me :-)

  2. Top Commentators Plugin

There are a ton of these out there. Which do you guys recommend?

  3. Site Re-Launch Contest

I want to run a contest of some kind to promote the site's new look and feel. I have bought a 23" LCD display to give away (about a $300 value) but its just not doing it for me. What kind of prizes trip your triggers?

  4. Advertising and Monetization

I am worried about content, readers, traffic, and then monetization in that order.

But I need to get my theme optimized for ads up front. So to get the ball rolling, I am going to offer some ad spots for $10 a month via PayPal. I get about 2,000 unique visitors a week, in case you need to know what your $10 buys.

As for ad space, I have no idea where it will be yet except for the banner you see at the top of the page now. Drop a comment if you are interested or email me (tschrock schrockinnovations.com

  5. MAKE $25! A New Name, Logo, Favicon and Avatar

This is something I have thought long and hard about, but the Thor Schrock Marketing and Technology Blog is just not doing it for me anymore.

I need suggestions for new names for my blog. If you suggest a name and I use it, I will send you $25 via PayPal.

The name needs to convey that this is a blog about online marketing and the technology behind it.

That's it! Lots of info that you may or may not care about, and lots of nice open ended questions that just beg for comments. Drop a comment to get a free nofollow backlink and suggest a name to have a shot at the $25!

I am finally giving up on the old dig theme as a base for my blog. Between the components that do not accurately render across multiple browsers to the cumbersome sidebar interface - its time for the Old Digg theme to go.

I am planning on switching to the Cutline 3-column theme with some heavy modification. If you are a regular reader, please stick with me through the conversion.

Friend Blaster Pro Review and Techniques

I have some great content coming up! I just wrapped up an evaluation of a MySpace bot program called Friend Blaster Pro. I will tell you EXACTLY how far you can push it before tripping the MySpace security troopers. Of course, this review is not to be used for spamming - just maintaining the 100-some MySpace accounts you already have and manually update ;-)

Freebie Friday Giveaway

My Buddy Wes Wyatt suggested I review some hardware items and then give them away on the blog to build traffic. I have two video product reviews filmed, and I will be editing those shortly. I am thinking about calling it Freebie Friday, so guess when you should check back for that!

Advertising Opportunities

I will be adding a little bit of direct-buy banner advertising (not affiliate ads) as well as ScratchBack and of course the obligatory AdSense. Don't worry though - the main reason I write this blog is to generate good content and entertain. I make about $2 a day from it right now, so let's just say I have a way to go before I can buy McDonalds every morning from my blog revenue.

Of course, none of this makes a lick of difference if you can't navigate my busted up Digg Theme that won't work in Safari, looks like crap in FireFox, and gets blown up by a long category name in IE7. More to come guys!

This last weekend I was at the Lincoln celebration of America Recycles Day at Midland Recycling in downtown Lincoln.

To celebrate the event, pledge boxes were distributed across Lincoln so people could pledge to start recycling. Students in high schools across the city also collected pledges for a chance to win some cool prizes.

One of the cool prizes was a $1,500 2007 Holiday Special Computer package from Schrock Innovations.

Just as Mayor Beutler announced.. "and the winner is..." a train appeared out of nowhere and fired off its whistle. It was perfect timing. No one could hear who won the prize, and the recycling mascot, R.E. Cycling (who is also a Schrock computer customer by the way) hammed it up.

If you have not heard by now, Joel Comm is opening up the Next Internet Millionaire Secret Classroom. The Secret Classroom is a 12 DVD set that contains all of the Next Internet Millionaire episodes, but more importantly, the COMPLETE teacher sessions.

I was in that classroom for two weeks and I can tell you that there was SOOO much information in there that has helped me transform my online businesses and presence. Throughout the weekly Next Internet Millionaire episodes you can see a small sampling of each of the teachers and the topics they discussed.

If you haven't been following the episodes, I have organized an UNAUTHORIZED Next Internet Millionaire Secret Classroom where you can see each of the teachers and some of what they had to say while I was on the show.

If you are planning on purchasing the Secret Classroom DVD Set ($497) DON'T BUY IT YET!!!

Go to my UNAUTHORIZED Secret Classroom and sign up for an email alert by entering your name and email address in the form. I will let you know the SECOND the Secret Classroom is released. My wife and I adopted our son Jacob from an awesome woman in Hastings, NE about 16 months ago. We have an open adoption, which means he will always know who his
birthmother is and she will always know how he is doing and is always welcome to visit in our home.

We chose open adoption because it was the best thing for our son. When we finalized his adoption, his birthmother became a member of our family as well. We all get along really well, swapping MySpace comments (she is really the only reason I log in once in a while there), laughing over photos, and trading those little tidbits that only parents would care about.

While things have been relatively smooth for our open adoption, that's not how it goes for all families who enter into this socially complex situation. What happens when the adoptive grandparents, aunts, and uncles simply can't or won't accept the role of a birthmother in an open adoption?

What would you do if you had invited a birthmother to Thanksgiving, and your parents went behind your back and called the birthmother to uninvite her?

That is exactly what happened to one adoptive family. This family adopted at about the same time we did, and has an open adoption as well. Some members of their family have been resistant to the idea of an open adoption, saying that the birthmother is not a "real part of the family."

I guess its just amazing to me that "family" can do something so hurtful to an adopted child (because that is who is really going to be hurt by this in the end).

Kids are not stupid. They figure things out even though they don't always understand them entirely. If family members continue this negative path, the child is eventually going to figure out that these family members care more about their own feelings than the welfare of a child.

Its normal to have family arguments and the drunk uncle sprinkled here and there on Thanksgiving. But there is a line that should not be crossed for the well-being of the child. Calling a child's birthmother and uninviting them to Thanksgiving is waaaaaay over that line.

Ok, so three days of Shoemoney is a lot - especially when he is talking to/about me. But what he is really known for is making money online - LOTS OF MONEY.

I recently had the opportunity to preview a manuscript of "The Shoemoney Playbook." There is a lot you don't know about Shoemoney like the fact that he made $12 million IN PROFIT online over the past 5 years.

I can't give up all of the nuggets in his upcoming book, but what I can tell you is that he was willing to give some of them up in an interview I conducted with him about how his Viral Relationships have transformed his business and his life.

In the interview, Shoe talks about how to approach bloggers of status, and how not to approach them. He talks about some of the key people and moments in his online career. If you want to see a behind the scenes success story that you can emiulate, you need to watch this interview.

To watch the interview, please visit www.viralrelationships.com and enter your name and email address. A link will be emailed to you to take you to the page with the interview. You can watch it online or download it to your media center to watch later in HD.
