As if the 1987 film Adventures in Babysitting had not provided enough bad Thor jokes, Marvel Comics is preparing to create a new movie about the 1960's comic book super hero, The Mighty Thor.
A friend of mine emailed me and jokingly said this is a HUGE promotional opportunity. We'll see. Maybe there's a few good parodies in it at least.
If nothing else, I will be the only guy able to go to a Halloween party next year as himself in costume!
Ok, hold on to your hats for this one folks. An Australian study found that laser printers eject toner particles into the air when they are printing.
No big news there right? Everyone knows that "sweet smell of productivity" that fills the air on a big printing job. But what you don't know is that there is a possibility those toner particles are carcinogenic.
The study noted that almost all toner cartridges contain Carbon Black, a known class B2 carcinogen. Conventional wisdom says that as long as the toner gets fused to your paper and your boss does not make you eat your documents with lunch, you are probably safe. The question the study asked was does the Carbon Black nastiness get ejected into the air that comes out of the laser printer.
Airborne Death?
As you might imagine, HP is taking this whole thing pretty seriously. It was reported on a few different ZDNet blog posts that HP disputed the findings of the Australian study, sighting inaccurate particle measurement.
In fact, HP said that more testing would be needed to determine if toner particles are ejected when printing and if so, how much, if any, Carbon Black is in the toner particles and at what concentration.
It is also of note to mention that nearly all toner contains Carbon Black, regardless of the brand of the printer. HP gets the brunt of this blow because they are the market leader.
Of the HP printers tested, models 1320 and 4250 were found to have higher levels of emissions than the model 4050, which had nearly no emissions at all.
Am I Going to Die?
So the bottom line here is that if you have an ink jet printer you have nothing to worry about. If you use a laser printer in home or at work you may be exposing yourself to a known cancer-causing agent.
I am not going to stop using my laser printer, and I suspect most people won't go back to pen and paper anytime soon. Like all medical studies, there will be another and another and another and they will all contradict each other.
We may find out the truth in a decade or so, but until then you might want to change the furnace filter in the copy room a little more often - just in case.
Let me tell you a story about outsourcing gone bad. Its amazing to me that I can outsource some of the most complex activities, but something this simple is giving me so much grief...
As a general rule I always hesitate to outsource things that can be done within the walls my business. As I develop better viral relationships, I have been more willing to outsource things that I could do, but simply don't have the time to do.
So while my wife was away and I was off in Colorado, I hired a lawn service to mow my yard three times while I was away and my wife was out of town.
I Guess a Name Means a Lot
I opened up the yellow pages and called a couple places, but many of the lawn care companies didn't answer and did not have voicemail. $$ LOST guys!!!!
Finally I got in touch with Git-R-Done Lawncare in Omaha, NE. They said they would mow my 1/3 of an acre for $40 a week, blow off the sidewalk and edge with a weed-eater.
Not bad I thought! Boy was I wrong!
The First Mowing Disaster
The first time Git-R-Done pulled up to mow my wife was home. They seemed to mow the yard in record time, get back in their truck and pull away.
Later that day my wife realized why they were so fast. They only mowed 1/2 of my yard!!! They didn't weed-eat at all from what she could tell and there were clippings all over the sidewalk. Not impressed.
My wife called them and asked them to do a better job next week because we were planning an outdoor birthday party for my son when I came home from Colorado.
Welcome to the Jungle
My wife left town too after the first mow, and she never heard anything back from Git-R-Done Lawncare, so we both assumed all was well - until we got home.
Git-R-Done didn't get anything done. They had not been back to mow at all since the first 1/2 mowing job they did. Our yard was over 7" tall in some spots, and the bugs were horrible.
I mowed the top half of the yard to get it ready for the party at least, but the humidity had locked a lot of moisture into the grass and it would have been one hell of a mess to have toddlers walking, running, falling and eating on the freshly cut grass.
Moral of the Story
I am glad I had the opportunity to learn this lesson at the expense of a $40 lawn mowing. Don't outsource to people you don't know. It just doesn't work. Ask for recommendations from your friends and neighbors first.
So with that... Does anyone know of a good lawn care company that does what they say they will do for a reasonable price?
There is an old adage that says "its not what you know, its who you know." While some people may disagree about how far you can get without any core knowledge, it is undoubtedly true that people with contacts make it further in business than people who don't have them.
So what is the difference between the list of people that most of us keep in our Outlook, and those key relationships that transform our businesses? The relationships that end up being key to our success are the stuff that legends are made of.
Viral relationships spread through a company like a virus, infecting culture, outcomes, and profitability. Leveraging the right viral relationship can make or break a small business.
What is a Viral Relationship?
A viral relationship happens when one connection between two people in business is so powerful that it can pull an entire organization in a new direction.
A mere contact becomes a viral relationship when people are willing to help each other without a direct benefit in the short term. These people help propel us in new directions with a few mere words or actions.
Viral Relationships are KEY!
If you look far enough into an any successful business story, there is a relationship that was instrumental in touching off something huge. Those somethings propel businesses that would have been mildly successful to near legendary status.
I made have developed several viral relationships throughout Schrock Innovations' success. In fact, I don't think we would be here today if it were not for a few key relationships that have proven invaluable over the past 7 years.
So How Can I Build A Viral Relationship?
Is there a formula that a business person could follow to develop the key relationships predictably time and time again? I believe there is. I believe I have found a way to quantify that formula so it can be repeated time and time again.
I will be sharing this formula soon. In the meantime, reply to this post with examples of Viral Relationships in your business or life. I may contact you for more information and let you in on the secret!

Today is my first full day back on the job at Schrock after the filming finished on the set of the web's first reality show, the Next Internet Millionaire.
I knew I was heading to Colorado for a huge opportunity, but I had no idea what was in store for me.
SO I know what you are all thinking - tell us what happened!!! You know me - I would love to, but I can't. I signed a strict NDA that prohibits me from sharing any information until the show has aired that weekthe show's season has concluded.
Starting August 15th you can watch episode 1 at www.nextinternetmillionaire.com. After each week's episode I will post my thoughts and some inside information about what was left on the editing room floor.
All of the contestants are planning on launching an "insider" website as well. As soon as that site is up and running I will let you know.
I never dreamed that there would be as much drama as there was on this show, and I think you will enjoy watching it!
I was checking my incredible backlog of email this afternoon and I saw a message from www.myspace.com saying a friend had sent me a message. I clicked the link and this is what I saw:

Maybe it was a fluke, but I have never seen a DNS error like this on a major site like MySpace before. Usually you see these when you are moving to a new web server or in the RARE instance that someone gets into your DNS settings and screws something up.
Anyone else having troubles aside from the normal MySpace glitches?
Someone recently taught me that the mark of a good leader is someone who can rally people around a central cause and motivate them to achieve it.
It looks so simple when it is written as a sentence, but in practice how can you effectively rally several different personalities around a goal in a way that allows each participant to set aside their personal desires for the betterment of the team?
After reflecting on that for a bit, I believe it comes down to belief. The people being led must believe that the leader has the vision and desire to get the job done.
Look at Steve Jobs for example. In the early days of Apple he used several negative motivation techniques that literally pushed people to the limits of what they could take, but in the end Apple developed a great product. His employees were willing to endure extreme conditions because they believed in his vision for the company. They believed in him.
If you are a leader what are you doing to inspire your people? What is working for you and what is not?
This isn't a trick question. I have a feeling like I am on the cusp of some kind of epiphany but I am missing one piece of the puzzle. Do you have it?
For those of you following the Next Internet Millionaire competition, you should pay close attention to Joel Comm's blog.
I can't talk at all until the show airs, but he can! Check it out!
It hasn’t been any big secret that one of our most senior technicians and key employees, Blaze Johnson, has left Schrock to take an awesome position managing networks for Duncan Aviation.
The only thing I hate more than firing an employee is hiring a new one. The classifieds in the Lincoln Journal Star are such a rip off at more than $800 for a one week job advertisement.
A few other business owners I have talked to have received better value from www.cornhuskerhelpwanted.com, but we always start off by posting the position on our website first. You never know who may see it and respond.
One Thursday evening as I was waiting for an interview with Zach from the Lincoln Journal Star (the reported who wrote the AWESOME story about me in the Next Internet Millionaire competition), an email flashed across my screen.
The email was an application for employment from Doug. As I read his resume, I wondered out loud if someone from above was smiling down on me. I had NEVER received a resume from such a qualified individual out of the blue.
In fact, Doug actually applied for the Duncan job that Blaze won. In almost every way Doug had the experience on paper to equal everything that Blaze had.
I brought him in for an interview that night, and hired him two days later. So now the only question is will Doug’s on-paper skills measure up in the high-demand customer service world of Schrock Innovations…
Tomorrow I will let you know EXACTLY how Doug handles one of the most difficult Schrock tests we could throw at him – a Maintenance Checkup sale.
A couple days ago I received an email from Dave Cisar, the owner of www.winningyouthfootball.com. Dave came to us a few months ago and asked us to host and maintain his website.
Dave knew a lot about optimizing his website for the search engines, but after experiencing some initial success, he was slipping in the rankings. His product sales were dropping off and he needed to turn things around.
We kept the look and feel of his website, but redesigned some of the back-end code to be more search engine friendly. We helped Dave target the keywords that would bring him the most customers and maximize his return on investment.
This is the email that Dave sent me yesterday:
I did everything you told me to do for SEO and we are now in the Google top 10 in 5 of the 6 main key words we want. We are #4 on one main key word phrase!
We aren't making a bundle yet, but are getting about 1000 hits a day, 500 organic. Crushed our sales from last year and actually made a profit LOL.
THANKS!
DC
For those of you who don't speak the web lingo, this means that Dave has more than doubled the number of people coming to his website since coming on board with us, he is selling more of his football coaching products than ever, and his company is now making money.
Congratulations Dave! We are looking forward to doing a complete redesign in November so you ca find that bundle you are looking for!
I received this email from Yahoo Photos the other day...
Dear Yahoo! Photos user,
For some time now, we've supported two great photo sharing services: Yahoo! Photos and Flickr. But even good things come to an end, and we've decided to close Yahoo! Photos to focus all our efforts on Flickr — the award-winning photo sharing community that TIME Magazine has called "completely addictive."
We will officially close Yahoo! Photos on Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 9 p.m. PDT. Until then, we are offering you the opportunity to move to another photo sharing service (Flickr, KODAK Gallery, Shutterfly, Snapfish, or Photobucket), download your original-resolution photos back to your computer, or buy an archive CD from our featured partner (for users of the New Yahoo! Photos only). All you need to do is tell us what to do with your photos before we close, after which any photos remaining on Yahoo! Photos will be deleted and no longer accessible.
Of course, we hope you'll join us at Flickr (you can even use your Yahoo! ID), but we also realize that Flickr may not be for everyone. In the end, we want you to find the service that's right for you, and we hope you take some time to learn more about your options before making this important decision.
Please give us your decision by Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 9 p.m. PDT. After that time, any photos remaining in Yahoo! Photos will be deleted. Click here to make your decision, or review a list of our frequently asked questions.
Thanks for being a part of the Web's largest photo sharing service — we hope to see you over at Flickr! The Yahoo! Photos team
The funny thing is that I never used Yahoo Photos, and only minimally use Flickr.
Back in February I reported some behind the scenes information after a visit to my family physician (at the time) Doctor Robert Brown at Family Med Center in Omaha.
My wife was out driving yesterday and she noticed that the old Family Med Center location is now for lease. Channel 7 News (the station that broke the pain pill death story) never did a follow up that I saw, so I don't really know what happened in the case.
Maybe some of my readers have some information?
I am just about to board a plane to Denver where I will be greeted by the producers of the Next Internet Millionaire web reality show and whisked away by car to Loveland, CO.
I have been asked to sign a nondisclosure agreement that prohibits me from talking about the show, the show's results, or any of the contestants.
If I do well on the show, I could be in Colorado until August 5th. If I am home before then, that means I was eliminated and sent home :-(
I am going to miss my family, my coworkers, and my customers while I am away. It is so hard for me to leave my work behind to do this. (Is that the sign of a work-a-holic? I have trouble leaving work so I can work on something else?)
I will be posting here while I am away - just not about the show. Thanks for your support and keep me in your prayers!
I am sorry I could not tell all of you about this before today, but now that my name has been released on the Next Internet Millionaire website, I can report that I am one of the 12 finalists who will appear on the web's first reality show.
Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who voted for me, blogged about my audition, watched my audition videos, and sent emails with words of support. I can't begin to tell you how humbling it was to have so many people support my audition in so many ways.
I will be traveling to Loveland, CO for the competition and consequently will be out of the office from July 21st to August 5th (unless I get vote off before then).
I have been told that I can check email and return phone calls in the evenings, however I should not expect to have enough time to "run a business" while I am there. I am not allowed to have my cell phone or computer with me while the filming is taking place throughout the day.
I am expecting this news to hit all over the media as the day progresses. While I am sure that the stories and interviews will be all about me and this show, I want to take a moment to thank the specific individuals who provided the ideas, talent, and motivation to get me on this show.
Once I was notified that I made the top 12, I only had two weeks to prepare press releases, produce an acceptance video, get everything in the shop ready for a 2 week absence, and make sure everything at home was taken care of. Alissa is the mastermind behind the media blitz you will be hearing throughout the day today. Alissa is an A+ professional marketer and she gets results. If you need someone to handle your media relations, she is the perfect woman for the job.
Don and Miriam are some of the most talented videographers I have ever seen. They were the production muscle behind my second audition video as well as my acceptance video. Just check out their website to see a sample of the awesome work they do. They work hard at a very reasonable price. Thanks for all of the help guys!
Who said reading my blog doesn't pay off? If you are reading this you are one of the first people to hear about the LAST in-shop Maintenance Checkup sale of 2007!
Twice each year we discount our popular in-shop computer checkup and tune up service to a mere $9.99. The service, which normally costs $60, covers just about every inch of your PC. During the Maintenance Checkup we:
Typically it takes about 8 hours of technician time to perform a Maintenance Checkup on a PC. As you can see, our in-shop Maintenance Checkup is a great value at $60.
But it is A STEAL at $9.99!
Our bench typically fills up fast during this sale, so for the quickest turn around time try to bring your computer in Saturday or Monday.
We are open Saturday from 12-5 and Monday from 10-6. You can find our phone numbers and addresses on the Schrock Innovations contact page.
I will be talking about this on our radio show as well, so get in while the getting is good!
I was reading a great post on Robin Harris' blog about hard drive lifespan and why hard drives just up and die sometimes. I learned a couple new things, so I figured I would pass the information on to my readers as well.
One of the most expensive (and heartbreaking) situations we handle for our customers is replacing a failing hard drive. The number 1 question I am always asked is what did I do to cause my hard drive to go bad?
The answer is... NOTHING! You did nothing wrong. Hard drive failure can happen to anyone at any time and is simply luck of the draw. A new Google-backed study with a sample size of 100,000 hard drives proves it.
Here are some of the more interesting facts from Harris' pot:
So Harris points out that your individual luck is really what determines the likelihood of your hard drive failing. Google's study data finds that brand, operating environment, and usage volume have as much to do with hard drive failure as the tiny gremlins that hang out on your desk when you are not looking do.
Please take a moment this morning to make a backup of your important data and then go buy a lottery ticket. This might be your lucky day!
Kim Komando was way here before me with the whole Digital Goddess angle, so I always hesitate to play on my name as a "Digital God."
But that doesn't mean we don't share a few radio listeners and Google fans. I just received a Google Alert that the Schrock Innovations website was mentioned on the Kim Komando forums.
It looks like our remove ExpertAntivirus tutorial from our DIY section was recommended to help one of Kim's listeners. Thanks for helping us help people Komando listeners!
A couple months ago I posted about my less-than-stellar experience with ReviewMe. I promised then to follow up on the status of my ReviewMe payment.
As of this moment I have not been paid for any of the reviews I completed on ReviewME and at this point I do not expect that I will.
Google's recent revision of their webmaster guidelines and their growing push to differentiate paid links versus real links might make services like ReviewMe and TextLinkAds obsolete anyway.
Mary Jo Foley reported on her blog yesterday that Microsoft will be releasing Windows Vista SP-1 release Candidate 1 by mid-July, with the final service pack coming by November 2007.
Unlike the Service Pack1 for Windows XP, Vista SP1 will be a lot of highly technical updates that might not translate to much that the end-user will be able to see.
Planned updates include:
It's worthy to note that this is not a complete list of features and planned improvements. However, unnamed sources did specify that the emphasis in Vista SP1 will be on improving existing features and not introducing new features as Microsoft did with Windows XP SP2.
Over the past week I have noticed an increase in the number of spam emails that were trying to trick me into disclosing my personal information or infect my computer with a virus.
If these emails are making it through my filters, chances are they are making it through your also. Here are some of the latest emails and what they are trying to get you to do.
1) The Classic "Your Bank" Email
This one has been around for a while, but since the results of falling for it are so catastrophic it deserves mention here. This scam involves an email that arrives in your inbox that appears to be from your bank. Typically the message is asking you to click on a link that can look quite legitimate to verify recent activity in your account.
What actually happens is that when you click on the link you are taken to a phishing page that looks identical in every way to your bank's homepage.
The email message asks you to log in, so the temptation is to enter your user name and password to log into the banking website. Once you enter the information and click submit your banking password is whisked away where the scammer can use it to access your bank account for any number of reasons.
If you fall for this one, contact your bank and explain what happened. Immediately change your online banking password as well.
2) The "You Have Received a E-Card" Email
These have been picking up with some frequency over the past few weeks. These emails appear to come from legitimate E-Card websites like www.hallmark.com, but actually are fraudulent emails designed to infect your computer with a Trojan virus.
Trojan viruses can lie dormant on your computer for weeks, before being activated by the virus writer to accomplish whatever task they desire. They are usually used to make your computer part of a bot-network.
Once thousands - or even tens of thousands - of computers are part of a bot-network these networks can be used to attack websites or send spam email. If you get an E-Card - especially one in poor English - don't open it unless you are expecting it for a birthday, anniversary, or other special holiday.
3) The "Install this Patch" Email
As I was writing this post an email arrived in my inbox that told me that there was unusual spam email activity from my IP address and that I needed to install a patch (link provided) to remedy the problem.
Of course, no one reputable emails you a patch you are not expecting. Microsoft does not do it, most ISPs do not do it, so the best policy is to not install patches from strangers.
Have you received a scam email? Post it here and help protect others!
Last week before the iPhone launched I predicted that the AT&T network would have trouble keeping up with the bandwidth needs of iPhone users.
In fact, the day the iPhone launched, AT&T's activation network was knocked out by the sudden surge of iPhone activations. AT&T said they had remedied the problem and would contine to expand their data network.
Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut, because all of a sudden AT&T is burrying new fiber optic cable in my front yard!
AT&T listen up - Your network rocks and there is no need to expand it in my yard at the moment! At least wait until I have sold my house!
My wife and I bought a neat little house in South Omaha when we moved to Lincoln to open our Omaha Service Center. Now that we are off the ground here and running smoothly, its time to sell the Omaha house and move again!
We have replaced just about everything in our craftsman-style home. We have launched very small website (one page!) to help sell our home for sale in Omaha NE.
If you or someone you know is looking for a nice 1300 square foot home on a double lot with a 1930's era firehouse for a garage, then this is the place for you.
We are asking $124,600 for the package. If you are a good negotiator, you might be able to convince me to leave the home network and servers here too ;-)
A few weeks ago a friend of mine (we'll call her Mary here) found herself wondering if the website she paid thousands of dollars for was actually hers. In her painful example, there is an important lesson to learn about what to do and what not to do when you contract with a web design or marketing company.
The Weaving of a Web Design Disaster
Mary emailed me late in the evening to ask me if there was anything Schrock Innovations could do to help her out of a terrible situation. She had hired a local web design company to build her a website for just over $45,000. The site was incredibly complicated and specialized. The project was mostly completed over the course of a year, but there were constant glitches and other issues that needed to be addressed.
At first her web design company (who required her to pay up front in full) was willing to address her concerns. But over time, that cooperative spirit devolved into heated words over what was covered by the customer's original purchase and what would require additional expenditure.
Mary informed the hosting company that she would be taking her website to be hosted elsewhere. That was when she was floored by the company's answer.
We Own Your Website and you Can't Access it or Take it
Mary was told that she could leave anytime she wanted, but her website was the property of the design company and she could not take it with her.
In addition, the design company suddenly raised her quarterly hosting price 100% to help cover "an unusually high number of maintenance requests."
So Mary had a choice - she could walk away and spend another $45,000 to have the site rebuilt with another company, or she could swallow the hosting increase and pay extra to get the functionality that was originally promised in the project document.
How Can a Web Design Company Do This
The web design company claimed that they went through the time and effort to create components that are used in Mary's website but are not owned by Mary. Specifically, the company claimed they created a content management system and a scheduling system. Without these systems, Mary's website would be useless.
The design company claimed that they use those components in many websites, and that Mary had only purchased a license to use those components as long as she was hosted with them.
In addition, the company also designed Mary's company logo and website layout. The copyright notice in Mary's source code claims that the design company has the rights to all of it - even her company logo and brand.
Mary's Side of the Story
Mary felt she paid $45,000 for a website and that she should own it. The licensing distinction was never disclosed to Mary in any project document or conversation. Mary was shocked when she found she was artfully backed into a corner by her web design company.
In fact, after talking with me Mary found out that there are tons of open source content management and scheduling systems out there that are free for use.
If the design company would have used these components instead of developing them all over again at Mary's expense, their claim to the website would be significantly weaker.
Mary found that unless she had a "work for hire" contract (which she didn't) with her web design company it was up in the air as to who owned the website.
Mary's options are now to sue the web design company and sort out who owns what. Unfortunately, the design company also reserves the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason, so a lawsuit would most likely result in the design company terminating her hosting contract. Mary would lose $40,000+ a month in business revenue if that happened.
Option two was to swallow her pride and open her wallet. She would have to pay the design company to keep things working while she spent three months worth of profit to redevelop the website all over again with a more reputable web design company.
After a couple days of talking with Mary about this horrible situation, we found another potential solution that *could* allow Mary to take back her website, stick it to her design company and make them take on the expense of suing her if they really wanted to claim ownership of the code.
The Third Option to Take Your Website Back
If you find yourself in Mary's situation and you own your URL there is a third option. If you own your URL (that is you registered it in your name or your design company registered it in your name with them as the technical contact) you might be able to TAKE your website back without your design company's permission.
Typically design companies do not host websites themselves. Instead they outsource hosting to an outside hosting company. Since you own your URL, you can contact the co-location center where your website is hosted and DEMAND a complete copy of your website and all associated databases.
They are required by law (although I am not a lawyer and you should always consult yours) to give you what you own, and they typically will. Now keep in mind that they will also notify the design company of what they are doing, so it is a good idea to have a plan in place to deploy the website immediately once you get it to avoid down time.
Schrock Innovations is now seeking a full-time computer repair technician for in-shop and on-site work. This is a salaried position that pays $30,000 a year. Schrock also offers a 401K with company match, discounted web hosting and an extremely flexible schedule to its employees.
Although this position is primarily intended to be a technical position, applicants should expect to deal directly with Schrock Innovations customers on a day to day basis. We have built our reputation on excellent customer service, so if you are good with computers and good with people, then you are the person for us.
We are open from 10-6 Monday through Friday and Saturday from 12-5, and the candidate who fills this position will be required to be here during those hours as much as possible.
I am looking to fill this position as soon as possible, as the opening is immediate. Contact me to apply for the position.
In case you missed out on the whole Next Internet Millionaire train and want to see my audition videos, here they are posted below. I did not post them before this because I wanted people to watch them AND be able to vote. Now that the voting is over, no need to put you though the hoops to see them!
First Round:
Semi-Finals:
Bloopers:
Today's Compute This show is posted on the Schrock Innovations Radio page for your listening pleasure.
For the first time in weeks I did not ask a single person to vote for me in the Next Internet Millionaire competition. However, I DID ask people to vote for Schrock Innovations as the best computer repair company in the Best of Lincoln Competition!
A lot of you have been IMing and emailing me asking me if I earned a seat on the Next Internet Millionaire show. The short answer is I know the results of all of our efforts, but I can not disclose them yet.
The producers of the show are working hard to keep this information quiet so they can build suspense for the show. They will be releasing two candidates each week at www.nextinternetmillionaire.com and I don't want to undermine that by releasing my results just yet.
Please don't assume anything from my answer. If I would have made it I would have probably been asked to keep quiet about it. If I didn't make it I would not announce that until they were done with their promotional efforts.
With that aside, today's show was great! Chris Goforth was cooking on about 2 hours of sleep and three Red Bull energy drinks and the calls were flowing!
One gentleman called and asked how he could get his computer to stop popping up the dial-up box now that he has high speed Internet. Another caller had purchased a used computer and needed to know how to boot into safe ode on Windows ME.
Of course we talked about the Summer Computer Special at Schrock Innovations, where you can buy a complete computer system for a mere $599!
If you missed the show, be sure to listen to the archived audio on the website and we will be talking to you again next week at 10 AM on KFOR 1240. By the way, if you live out of the Lincoln listening area, you can listen here online.
The latest edition of Smart Computing Magazine hit subscribers yesterday. In it I wrote an article that will help those of you new to Windows Vista get your computer booting in record time.
There were a lot of changes to the way Vista boots as compared to Windows XP. While some f the old tricks like MSCONFIG and defragging your hard drive still hold true, Vista offers a few new tweaks for those of us who have a need for speed.
If you are not a subscriber to Smart Computing Magazine, it is literally the best value on the magazine rack when it comes to computer help and advice. This issue should be on the news stands in July.
Every year KFOR 120 AM in Lincoln, NE holds a "Best of Lincoln" competition to find out what local businesses Lincolnites patronize most often. In the past the survey (which is not just a survey of KFOR listeners) has been a telephone poll.
For the past five years Schrock Innovations has been ranked the top independent computer repair company in that poll.
But this year you will not get a phone call from KFOR. That's because they have moved the voting to their website. The new system requires Lincolnites to enter the name of each company they like as the #1 in various categories. If the visitor does not have a favorite for a particular category, they are asked to enter the word 'none'.
One of the neat things about the phone survey was that you know that KFOR was surveying the entire city, and not just their station listeners. But moving the survey to their website, they will gain a lot of web traffic, but they will also lose out on a lot of opinions from people who do not listen to their station.
Never the less, I would respectfully ask you to Read More
