Why Should I Upgrade to Windows 7?

Windows 7 runs faster than Windows XP does (on the same hardware) and is compatible with EVERYTHING that Vista is!

Some of the biggest benefits of Windows 7 include:

  • Faster Hard Drive Access Times
  • Much Less bloated than XP or Vista
  • Faster Boot times
  • Avoid the expense of hardware upgrades
  • Support for the latest PC technologies
  • Better notebook battery life and performance

Is My Computer Ready for Windows 7?

Vista users have nothing to worry about in moving to Windows 7. Microsoft guarantees that all programs and drivers that are compatible with Vista will be compatible with Windows 7.

In fact, because Windows 7 runs so much faster than Vista, upgrading to the new operating system will have the same impact as DOUBLING your PC's current memory and processor capabilities.

If you are looking to give your Vista PC a boost, the best prescription for your sluggish Vista PC is Windows 7!

Windows XP users will need to run a Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor tool to determine if their computer is capable of running Windows 7.

Windows XP users have to perform a "clean install" to get Windows 7 up and running on their computers after they pass the Upgrade Advisor. After the clean install, all programs will have to be reinstalled from the original discs that were used to install them the first time.

Important Details:

  • Microsoft will ship the Upgrade DVD to your address. Schrock Innovations is not responsible for lost shipments or damaged discs.
  • There is an additional $5 shipping fee (from Microsoft) to ship the discs to your home
  • This special offer and the warranty contained within does not cover hardware in your PC that fails during the warranty period. It only covers the installation of the operating system.
  • Schrock Innovations always recommends you back up your important data before upgrading your operating system. We will do our best to protect your data, but we can't be responsible for lost files.
  • This offer is ONLY good through the end of the day on July 10th, or while supplies last. This offer is limited to 100 installations.
  • When your discs arrive at your home or business, bring them with your PC into Schrock Innovations so our technicians can perform your upgrade.
  • Because this is a limited quantity offer, Schrock will charge $170 in installation fees at the time you purchase the upgrade. Microsoft will charge your credit card for the upgrade disks when they ship on October 22, 2009.
  • The quoted prices are for Windows 7 Home Premium. If you need more advanced versions like Business or Ultimate, additional charges may apply.
  • All installations purchased under this offer must be completed by December 31, 2009. Installations that are not completed will not be refunded.

funfridaysMicrosoft announced a special Windows 7 pre-order program today that offers the company's newest operating system at a DEEPLY discounted price.  But is your computer ready for Windows 7?

There are two basic camps of people who will be upgrading to Windows 7 - Vista users and XP users (Windows 2000 users can also technically upgrade, but in many cases their hardware is so old that ot will be incompatible).

Testing Windows Vista PCs for an Upgrade to Windows 7

Vista users will have a pretty easy time upgrading to Windows 7.  Microsoft is promising that everything that works with Vista will work with Windows 7.

When you run the upgrade disk, Windows 7 moves all of your documents, settings, registry, and programs to a holding directory.  It then installs a clean copy of Windows 7 and copies all of your information back over.  This eliminates many of the layered operating system problems that plagued XP and older upgrades.

In theory, everything should just work after the installation, but if you want that extra measure of comfort, you can run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check for any issues.

Testing Windows XP PCs for an Upgrade to Windows 7

Windows XP users will have a bit of a tougher time upgrading.

It is HIGHLY recommended that you ru the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.  There is a good chance that some of your hardware and/or software will not be compatible with Windows 7.

As a rule of thumb, if your software is not compatible with Vista, it will not be compatible with Windows 7.

With that said, the business and Ultimate versions of Windows 7 have a special feature that allows you to download and run a virtualized copy of Windows XP from within Windows 7.

Think of it like running Windows XP as if it was a program, and then opening up other programs from within it.  This will allow business users who rely on older software (and lazier IT staffs) to still run many of their old XP programs in a limited form.  There is no additional charge for the virtualized XP download.

When new web clients come to me they all seem to want one thing - They want to rank well in Google to get FREE business leads.

Before you start to navigate the thorny paths of search engine optimization, take advantage of what Google gives you for FREE.  Take 5 minutes to list your business with Google's Local Business Center and watch the sales leads ROLL IN!

What is the Google Local Business Center?

local-search-resultsWhen you do a Google search for a product, service, or business name you might have noticed the listings that appear under the Local Results heading.  These results are listed in geographic order based on what Google believes to be your current location.

Google doesn't just make these listing up.  Most of them come directly from the Local Business Center profile you can create free of charge to help promote your business.

Trackable Results

Last week Google added a feature to the Local Business Center that allows you to see how many times your listing was displayed, how many times visitors took an action, and how many people asked for directions to your business based on the listing.

For example, in the last 30 days our listing was shown 991 times resulting in 59 "actions".  An action is whenever a visitor clicks on the map to get more information about your company, clicks through to your website, or requests driving directions.

Here is how our 59 actions broke out:

  • 28 Clicks for more info on Maps
  • 1 Clicks for driving directions
  • 30 Clicks to your website

If you run the numbers, you find that this free listing converts about 6% of all Google searches for our key search terms right into our Lincoln Service Center.

Local Results

Keep in mind that these results are sorted by the distance Google believes the visitor is from the business.  This is not a situation where you can influence Google to list your operation above a competitor's.  If your business is a very localized operation - like a lawn mowing service - Google Local Business Center can get you some new customers who want top do business because you are close by.

Additional Benefits of Completing Your Profile

Once you have created and confirmed your account (they make you confirm your address by mailing you a post card with a code on it) you should complete your profile as completely as possible.  You can add the following to your profile that will help boost the number of leads you receive:

  • Up to 5 videos
  • Up to 10 Pictures
  • A Business Description
  • Customer Reviews
  • Accepted Forms of Payment
  • Service Area
  • Hours of Operation
  • Hourly Rates
  • Coupons

Here is a sample of the search results from Google with Schrock Innovations, another local competitor, and Brad's PC Repair.  Schrock has a 100% complete profile with coupons.  The other competitor has a mostly complete profile, and Brad's PC Repair has an incomplete profile.  Notice the difference in the search results:

local-business-listing

The bottom line is that if you are not using Google's Local Business Center you are missing out on new customers, leads, and probably sales.  This is a great alternative to the Yellow Pages and a no-brainer addition if you already have an ad.

Schrock Innovations has hired Steve Borland to head our Data Recovery Division!

Steve is a promising technician and an entrepreneur in his own right.   His company, Minaska Outdoors, makes some of the highest quality gaming calls on the market. His made-in-the-USA products can be found in retail locations like Cabela's.  The electronic game calls his company produces can bring animals within 10 feet with the push of a button!

Why Schrock Likes to Hire Entrepreneurs

Steve started his company from the ground up.  Now that he has people performing the company's day-to-day operations, he thought it was time to try something new.  Steve is returning to his PC roots to use his 10+ years of experience for Schrock's customers.

Some company owners are hesitant to hire people who have an entrepreneurial blend of talents.  A smart business owner is one who is willing to hire people who can do things he can't do - or doesn't have the time to do.  Rather than feeling threatened by an employee's drive and ambition, smart business owners visualize the amazing things that could be accomplished if their company was able to harness those entrepreneurial abilities.

Steve Will Head Our Data Recovery Division

Just as entrepreneurs have a unique blend of talent and ambition, they also require a uniqe position that will motivate and challenge them every day.  Schrock plans on placing Steve in charge of our Data Recovery Division.

Steve is already training on the Deepspar Imager and the Salvation Data Hard Drive Doctor System, as well as a host of data recovery software suites.

Steve has some experience with software based data recovery and he is excited to expand his knowledge to the realm of hardware recovery.  He will be swapping drive heads in our clean room before you know it!

A few weeks ago I posted about a special offer we put together to help get Vista's Service Pack 2 safely installed on computers before it is force-fed to our customers via automatic update on June 30th.  The response was pretty good, and we were turning around most of the installs (even the problem children) in less than a day.

We cut a new commercial that is running on local Lincoln television to promote the offer as well.  Take a look:

Jon had to pioneer a couple new fixes with Microsoft that we came across, but we were able to get everyone up and running with the new Service Pack.  Some of the problems we had to overcome included:

  • If you are running Vista Ultimate and have all language packs installed, Vista Service Pack 2 will not install (you have to remove them to install SP2)
  • The Czechoslovakian language pack doesn't uninstall -  You have to do an in-place upgrade (the equivalent to a repair installation in XP)
  • The dreaded 0x8000ffff "End of File" error - This stumped MS for 2 whole days
  • Death after installation reboot - Usually a symptom of a bad hard drive
  • Service Pack 1 was not installed - This is easy to fix

Midlands Business Journal CoverThe Midlands Business Journal runs some really informative articles on subjects and trends that can seem daunting to many business owners.  When they are doing a feature on a technology related subject they will often ask for some comments on the basic questions they plan on writing about in the feature.

Michelle Leach is one of the MBJ's most talented writers and she recently sent me an email with some questions about data recovery and data backup.  Here were some of the questions she asked and how I answered them:

  • What are the emerging trends with regard to business continuity/disaster recovery?

The corporate clients we service are becoming more an more aware of the need for off-site backups of their critical data.

Secure off-site backups like encrypted online services are entering the marketplace as an alternative to carting a removable drive home with you every night.

In the past, businesses have demonstrated the value they place in their methods of doing business and physical inventories by investing in trademarks and insurance policies.

As our economy shifts away from a manufacturing base and more toward an information base, organizations are understanding the need to protect their data assets just as they do their physical assets.

  • Have you noted any changes with regard to the volume of clients/types of clients that are coming to you for help on this front?

We are seeing clients move away from the old CD and DVD backup methods.  They are slow, typically incomplete, and are extremely prone to human error.

Software has evolved to a point where clients can automate their backups using flash drives, removable hard drives, and even online storage options.

We just spent 15 hours sorting out an office in Beatrice that did not have any standard operating procedures for their data.  They had been backing up the same 2007 Peachtree information for three years while their current Peachtree files were being stored on the secretary's workstation.

They had no backups, and all that stood between normal operations and a data recovery crisis was a single, 9 year-old hard drive.  That is not an optimal situation.

  • Do you think the economy has made business owners more proactive on this front or less (as they evaluate every dime) - why or why not?

The economy is actually forcing companies to look at their stored data in new ways.  Small business owners are beginning to understand the power of couponing their products to their customers via email instead of direct mail.

They are starting to realize that you can look at a past customer's purchasing history to predict future purchasing patterns.

All of these recession-busting sales and marketing strategies are based on current, accurate data.  As companies invest in these next-generation strategies to keep their balance sheets in the black during a recession, they are also protecting these newly discovered tools just like a salesman of the 20th century would guard his call list.

They are making backups because they understand that the cost of losing that data would by far exceed the cost of protecting it.

  • I know we talked about the data recovery clean room. Get me up to speed with that. When will that be offered and what does that mean for you as a company and for your clients?

Thanks for asking :-)  We currently have a functioning class 10,000 clean room in our Lincoln Service Center.  We have invested more that $70,000 in technology, equipment, training, and tools to establish the only fully-functional data recovery center in the Midwest (the next closest are in Texas and Minnesota).

Here are some Schrock Innovations Data Recovery Quick Facts:

  1. We have recovered over 100TB (roughly the equivalent of 900 standard PC hard drives) of data for our customers and clients in 2009 so far
  2. We are planning our next $50,000 investment to develop a class 100 clean room (allows us to do forensic data recovery)
  3. 80% of hard drives in our Data Recovery Center don't need to be opened to recover the data
  4. We recover date most frequently from camera memory cards and flash drives than hard drives
  5. Hard Drives tend to fail in their 1st year of their 3rd year
  6. Larger drives are more likely to fail than smaller ones and are more difficult to recover when they do
  7. Only 12% of our data recovery jobs are "software jobs" (i.e. 90% require hardware equipment to facilitate recovery of data)

the_blazeYou read that right!  Schrock Innovations is teaming up with 104.1 The Blaze in Lincoln, NE to give away one FREE netbook computer EVERY DAY for a whole month!  The promotion is called PC's and Pudding.  (Seriously)

How to Win One of the Schrock Netbooks:

All you have to do to win is listen to 104.1 the Blaze on the air or on the Internet and wait for the cue to call in.  When you hear the sounder, be caller #10 at 402-464-1041.  They will air the sounder once each day.

Improve Your Odds of Winning:

If you are trying to win by listening online I have a couple pointers for you.  The online feed is delayed by upto 45 seconds.  Since you have to be caller #10 to win the computer a time delay will make that challenging for online listeners.

You can improve your odds (and get more sleep) if you follow the Blaze on Twitter.  They will tweet specific details about when the sounder will be going off so you can be one of the first people to call in.  Knowing WHEN the sounder will happen dramatically improves your odds of winning!

What Are You Trying to Win:

schrock_netbookYou are trying to win an Asus netbook from Schrock Innovations.  The netbook has a retail price of $349.  Because the promotion is called PCs and Pudding, the radio station will throw in a box of instant pudding as well (seriously).  If you don't know how to use a netbook, the instant pudding is a nice addition to any office.

I have no inside information about when the sounders are going to air, and I can't do anything more than what I already have to improve your odds of winning, so enjoy the great music and have fun trying to win!

Netbooks are the latest arrival on the computing scene and are rapidly gaining popularity and acceptance among serious computer users.  In fact, there are reports that even Apple who one said netbooks were "junky" is bowing to the pressure to enter the netbook game.

What is a Netbook?

Basically, netbooks are miniature laptop computers.  They have screens that range from 7.5 to 10 inches, small keyboards, wireless capability, and often don't come with CD drives.

Netbooks are designed to be small, light and run a LONG time on a small battery.  For example, Schrock Innovations carries the Asus netbook line in our Computer Service Center.  These netbooks weigh in at less than 2 pounds, last 5-6 hours on a single battery charge, and have enough power to run Windows XP or Windows 7 comfortably.

Why Would Anyone Want a Netbook?

Netbooks are primarily designed for two user groups.  If you travel and you want the ability create documents, check email, and browse the Internet on a normal web browser (as opposed to a mobile browser) the netbook is designed for you.

For this user class the netbook fills the gap between smartphones and laptop computers with a device that can be slipped into most glove compartments or purses.

Secondly, netbooks are designed for people who have a standard desktop, but don't have a need to spend $700-$900 for an entry level notebook PC.  Netbooks are priced between $299 and $499, so they offer an inexpensive alternative to their larger notebook brothers.

The idea is that if you only plan on using the unit occasionally, the small keyboard and lack of a CD drive won't impact you because you will use your desktop for anything serious you want to accomplish.

Can A Netbook Be A Primary Computer?

Yes, netbooks can be used as the only computing device in your household as long as you do not do anything more advanced than internet, email, and solitaire.

Most netbooks have a VGA connector for an external display and at least 2 USB slots that could be used for a wireless keyboard and mouse.  With these devices you could use the netbook as a primary computer.

Which Should I Buy?

So with this new kind of computer on the market which type of unit is best for you?  That all depends on what you want to do.  Here is a basic guide that can help you decide:

Choose a Netbook for:

  • Internet
  • Email
  • Very Basic Games
  • Light Productivity Use (Word, Excel, etc..)

Choose a Laptop For:

  • Internet
  • Email
  • Intermediate Games
  • Home Office Productivity
  • Digital Photography
  • Light Video Editing

Choose a Desktop For:

  • Internet
  • Email
  • IAdvanced Gaming
  • Home Office Productivity
  • Digital Photography
  • Advanced Video Editing
  • Specialized Applications or Activities

lynn_hinderakerJust a few days ago I told you about an interesting meeting I had with Lynn Hinderaker, the man who invented the fast food value menu and literally transformed Taco Bell into what it is today.

Since that post, Lynn was also featured in the World Herald with some additional detail of what he did for Taco Bell, how he transformed a high-cost-low-profit company into a low-cost-high-profit national icon.

If you are loking for an inspiring story in a challenging economy give Lynn a call.  I am know as an idea guy, and he found a few things for Schrock that were right in front of my face that I had not seen!

Those who read my posts regularly know that I believe that a recession is the best time to attempt to expand your business.

Durring a recession your competition:

  • Will be reluctant to match your moves
  • Will cut back on service to increase the bottom line
  • Avoid investing in people and equipment

How Do You Expand Your Business When Your Customers are Spending Less?

The answer is pretty straight forward - you get more customers.  You take them from your competitors.

While your competitors are cutting like mad, you reach out and entice disgruntled customers into your fold.

To do this you have to increase your marketing budget, and radio auctions are a nifty tool to convert your unsold inventory or service certificates into needed advertising dollars!

How Do Radio Auctions Work?

Typically, radio stations sell air time for money.  In a tough economic climate, advertisers cut back, so stations have to get more cretive to hit their sales goals.

For example, lets say you own a website design company.  You might provide a $1,000 gift certificate to the radio station to auction on the air.  You would receive $1,000 in trade to spend on commercials, et. in exchange for your certificate.

The station would then auction the certificate on-air to its listeners who call in to make their bids.  The certificates often sell for less than their value, so the callers feel like they are getting a good deal.

You get the free commercials (not to mention a 5-minute plug during the auction its self), the customer gets a great value, and the station gets money.  Everyone is happy.

Keys to Success in a Radio Auction

There are a few things you can do to make sure your item sells for a decent amount in the auction.  Nothing is worse than getting no bids on your item!

  1. Don't assume the disc jockey knows what your product is or why it is a value.  Put this information in writing and provide it with the certificate.  You can't sell something if you don't know what it is!
  2. Make sure the certificate has an expiration date. Make it expire in 90 days.  Light a fire under the customer to move on it quickly, or lose it all together.
  3. Never provide a physical item to the station.  If you are giving away a surf board, give the station a certificate for a surf board.  This forces the customer to come to your business, learn where you are located, and establish a relationship.
  4. Get Paying Customers.  If you have a service business, provide a certificate for services that ensure you are capturing a new paying customer.  Using the web site design company example, if a new website normally costs your customers $3000, providing a certificate for $1000 is gaining you a new $2,000 customer.
  5. Provide multiple certificates for different things.  These auctions only happen once or twice a year - take advantage!
  6. Save your marketing dollars for a single, large promotion.  Don't spread them out over time.  If you see the most website sales in June, then save them until May and fire them all off to become top of mind just before your customers come looking for you.
  7. Be a part of the auction! In some cases you can call in to help "sell" your product.  Also, listen to the other products being offered.  You might be able to save some money on needed business items by putting in some pretty low auction bids!

All About Vista

This week our show focused heavily on the the latest Vista service pack update. The update was originally scheduled to be pushed via automatic update on June 30, however Microsoft has been making it available on Windows Update now.

If the install is popping up on your computer, you need to install it ASAP. We recommend you bring your computer to Schrock Innovations for our $39.99 installation special. This way you can be assured the update has been installed correctly.

In the News

The latest virus hitting the internet is called Gumblar. This virus attacks websites you trust and infects your computer. An interesting fact is that 37% of the websites you trust actually infect your computer. The Gumblar virus is no exception. The best way to prevent this from happening to you is to stay up-to-date on your security software. As always, we recommend Norton 360.

The Key to Key Words

Have you ever searched for song lyrics or "free" stuff on the 'net. The majority of us have and the likely hood of you getting a virus is great. Our suggestion, call your radio station and ask for the lyrics to the song and simply stop searching for free things.  Here are the most dangerous search terms on the web.

There are, however, key word searches you can type in without worrying about getting a virus. These are phrases such as things about the economic crisis and health questions. Search away about the economy and that agonizing pain in the neck-you're safe.

Taking Your Calls at 489-1240

After much discussion about the Vista Service Pack, we moved to the phones where we had several computer questions.

.dll extensions

Mike had an issue with his Windows XP machine. When he went to boot his computer he received a message that he needed to run a .dll file. A .dll extension means that there was probably malware on his computer that was taken off by his security software, but the extension was still on the computer. To solve this problem we recommended that Mike go his start, run menu and then type in msconfig. Then he needed to uncheck the box in the Microsoft utilities window for the .dll extension and it won't show up anymore.

Vista Service Pack and the Internet

Sharon had a question about the service pack update. Since Sharon said she never gets on the internet, the updates will not be pushed on her. However, we recommended that she updates her computer with the latest vista because it will speed up her file transfer times and also keep her battery life running longer. Keep in mind this is true for both laptops and desktop computers.

Virus Protection, Protection you should have

Ellen's computer boots up and tells her that she needs to download an update. However, when she goes to click cancel on the update, it does not let her. This is because it is not a genuine Microsoft, meaning she has been infected with Malware. We suggested that Ellen has a maintenance checkup to get rid of her viruses and registry keys. This a $59.99 special at Schrock Innovations.

Tune In

Tune in next week for Compute This radio show, Saturday, June 7 at 10am on KFOR 1240 am. We will answer your computer questions, draw a winner for the 25 dollar gift card to Schrock Innovations and get you up-to-date on the latest computer news.

A Reminder

If you have Vista and need your computer updated with the latest service pack, stop into Schrock Innovations and get the $39.99 special. If you questions you can also contact Schrock at 423-9595 and we will be happy to answer your Vista questions!

lynn-hinderaker-omaha-neIf you have ever eaten at Taco Bell, you have this man to thank.  Without Lynn Hinderaker it is very possible that Taco Bell would not exist and that the concept of the fast food "value menu" may never have seen the light of day.

In the 1980's Taco Bell was a struggling subdivision of PepsiCo and was about to be closed down completely.  One struggling franchise owner contacted Lynn and said he wanted to make his restaurant's last stand on an idea that surrounded a value menu.  His idea was that if customers could buy their food through inexpensive small transactions, they would buy more of it and profits would follow.

Lynn helped design the concept, the marketing pieces, and then shepherded the franchise owner through the process.  Success soon followed and as the word spread, other franchise owners asked Lynn for his help.

Word eventually reached PepsiCo and the value menu was officially sanctioned and launched across the nation to all franchise owners.

I found Lynn after he was slated to speak at the Lincoln Independent Business Association Monthly Luncheon in Lincoln, Nebraska.  After reading about what he did for Taco Bell, I decided that this was a guy I should get to know.  I added him on Facebook and sent an email through his company's contact form on the Omega Point website.

He replied to my email and we had a meeting in his Omaha office last Friday.  After our 30 minute meeting had grown to nearly three hours, it was pretty clear that Lynn Hinderaker has a LOT of expertise that could catapult Schrock Innovations to a whole new level of service excellence.

I am pumped to have the opportunity to work with Lynn.  You get a better feel for Lynn's passion and insight by seeing him in action.  On June 16th Lynn will be presenting one of his cornerstone concepts, Dance with the Customer at the LIBA luncheon.  Here is a sample of what he will have to say:

schrock_company_bbq_2009We closed the Schrock Service Centers early today for our annual company BBQ.  Schrock employs more people than ever, so the BBQ gives everyone an opportunity to tie a face to the telephone extensions between Omaha and Lincoln.

This year we held the BBQ in Omaha at my house.  We have 1/3 of an Acre in South Omaha, and our employees' kids made the most of it.  I have to admit that one of the best parts of our BBQ's is watching all of the kids have a blast playing together.

raspberry_cakesKim made her usual favorites - cold veggie pizza, raspberry chocolate cakes, and some awesomely marinated chicken and beef kabobs.  I played grill-meister and we cooked and ate an ungodly amount of food.

As usual we gave away thank you bags loaded with nifty knickknacks.  This year's theme was family night, so the bags were loaded with a classic game (like Sorry, Jenga, etc..), poker cards, a box of poker chips and some candies.

This year we also did something new by giving away some smaller gift bags with various prizes.  Each employee got to draw a bag to see what they won.  Scott's wife won a 4 GB talking iPod Shuffle, and our other employees found gift cards for everything from gas to iTunes, to WalMart in their bags.

Once everyone had finished eating we stoked up the fire pit and toasted smores with the kids.  Everyone had a blast, the kids got dirty, and everyone left with a very full belly.  Thanks for coming everyone!

FBI experiences a virus

In other news, the FBI and US Marshal were hit with an inexplicable virus. The FBI was not releasing any information at the time, except that social security numbers had not been accessed.

Marketing can happen to you

Despite the holiday weekend, we had many callers with computer questions. Charles had trouble getting off his internet. He was given a message that if he left the site he would lose everything. In reality this is just a marketing trick, you will not lose anything by closing this window.

Norton 360: All around protection for up to 3 computers

Bill had a question about getting his Norton 360 on his other two computers.

If you are experiencing similar problems, I recommend calling Schrock Innovations to set up a Schrock Desk. It is a simple way for us to see what you are seeing and we can help you get rid of the problem or get your Norton up and running.

Adobe Acrobat(ics)

Mike had a question about Adobe 8, which was not working properly. After viewing the Acrobat in his programs files he saw that it had to do with Acrotray.exe files. To fix this problem go to adobe.com/downloads to disable it and upgrade to Adobe 9.

vista-service-pack-2Before you get blind sided by a huge automatic update next week, you should know that Microsoft's latest major update will not install on your computer without some additional preparation.

This morning Microsoft released Vista Service Pack 2 for manual download. It should start automatically downloading to your PC within the next 10 days. You need to prepare your computer for this BEFORE it happens.

If you do not do these things, your computer will not be able to successfully install Vista Service Pack 2.

BEFORE you allow Service Pack 2 to install you must do the following:

  • Install Windows Vista Service Pack 1. You can't install Service Pack 2 without first installing SP1. If you try, the installation will fail and could damage your Windows Vista installation.
  • Install the Microsoft Servicing Stack Update. This is the most complicated Service Pack that Microsoft has ever released. For it to even install properly a patch has to be downloaded and installed first!
  • Backup your data. If something goes wrong during the installation process, you don't want to lose everything.

For a limited time Schrock Innovations is offering a special Service Pack Installation service for only $39.99.

Rather than jumping through all of the technical hoops yourself, we can do it for you!

Bring your PC into one of our Service Centers and we will have it back to you in 1-2 business days.

For the $39.99 price we will:

  1. Scan for and remove any viruses / malware from your computer
  2. Install Vista Service Pack 1 if you don't already have it
  3. Install the Microsoft Servicing Stack Update
  4. Create a System Restore Point
  5. Install Vista Service Pack 2
  6. Test your computer to make sure it is working properly
  7. Back your Service Pack installation with a 30-day warranty

Installing the latest Vista Service Pack can take up to 3 hours on your own on an original installation of Windows Vista.  Let our trained technicians install your Service Pack for you and know that the job is done right!

If you have any questions about Vista Service Pack 2 feel free to call us anytime at 86-496-8772.

white_or_wheat_sandwich_lincoln_nebraskaWe have a bit of a lunch tradition at Schrock Innovations.

Each day one of my employees asks, what are we getting for lunch?

The chorus of "i don't know" and "not Jimmy Johns again" echos through our service center.

After some discussion we all agree on a place and each employee takes a turn buying lunch for everyone else.

Scott suggested we try something new as a favor to him.  He told us we would not be sorry.

He asked if we could order lunch from White or Wheat Sandwich Shoppe.

White or Wheat took over the bay that used to hold Brown Baggers on 70th and Van Dorn.  I was so impressed with the sandwiches we ordered that I called to speak with the owner and tell her what a great job she was doing.

Most sandwich shops either buy pre-made bread, or make their own.  Making your own bread is a tricky thing.  You have to keep it fresh because without good bread you can't have a good sandwich.

On the flip side, the sandwich business is not exactly a high-margin industry.  You have to keep your food cost around 25% of your sales - no higher than 30% or you simply won't survive.

To my knowledge, White or Wheat is the only sandwich shop in Lincoln, NE that hand rolls and bakes each and every piece of bread they use in their facility.  When I say hand rolled I mean they don't use a machine.  Their bread is HAND ROLLED and you can taste the difference!

The owner of White or Wheat Sandwich Shoppe did not ask me to write this and I was not paid to write this.  Their sandwiches are genuinely good and I highly recommend them!

White or Wheat Sandwich Shoppe offers catering as well as delivery.  Call them for more information at 402-434-3980.

On Compute This, the term “whaling” was discussed. No, this is not another word for fishing; it is a word that describes online attacks for account information. We also touched on Google’s fail that happened earlier in the week. Google’s search engine was down for several hours, leaving users unable to use the site.

We then, of course, left time for our callers to ask questions. One man asked about the heat that was coming from his tower. This is simply an issue with a fan spinning too fast. If you are noticing the same thing, stop into Schrock Innovations and we will put in a different fan for you. We also talked about IP addresses and how to change them. All you have to do is call your internet service provider to get this changed. Another point we touched on is the life span of our computers. Most computers last up to three years, however Schrock’s computers last for about five to six years.

Our winner this week of the $25 gift certificate to Schrock Innovations was Harlow. That day Harlow came to the shop and picked up a surge protector.

We are also proud to announce that during the show our onsite technician, Eric, was given a pat on the pack for his knowledge. Our caller referred to him as “one smart cookie.” Way to go Eric!

On last thing, we still have surge protectors for a low price of $29.99 while supplies last. Call or stop by to get yours today and be sure to catch our next Compute This show at 10 am on KFOR, this Saturday, May 23.

What is whaling and why does Steve Jobs care?

On Compute This, we talked about the term “whaling.” Whaling is a term similar to phishing except that big names are targeted for maximum impact.

Over the past month, several whaling attacks have taken place against wealthy executives and individuals. The reason for whaling these people is quite obvious, they have the most money. However, how do wealthy, smart business executives fall for such a trick? These hackers have included legitimate logos, credentials, and terminology making it appear legit.

This has certainly caused a large stir among the wealthy, perhaps this is a lesson to all of us to watch out for these types of attacks, whether a big fish or not.

Can Google’s services really be trusted?

Google had a massive fail this week. Google maps, Analytics, Reader, Adsense, Gmail and everything else Google was down for an hour and a half. The cause of the fail was due to a traffic routing error directing people to the same place. What can we all learn from this error? We will let you figure that one out on your own.

How can I change my external IP address?

To change your external IP address it is quite simple. Just call your internet provider and they will do the rest for you.

Eric Whiteman Gets an on-air 'atta boy!

Our onsite guy, Eric Whiteman was given a pat on the back by a caller. Our caller, Charles, wasn’t sure on how to hook up his computer, so Eric went to his house, got it hooked up and connected to the internet. Way to go Eric, you truly are “one smart cookie.”

The single largest challenge that Schrock Innovations faces is maintaining the superior service levels that have been the building blocks of the success we are experiencing today.  My greatest fear is that there could be an inescapable inverse relationship between the size of a company and the levels of service it provides.

Look at Geek Squad for example.  Geek Squad was started by a bright entrepreneur in Minnesota who built a new kind of computer support company using a keen marketing eye and a commitment to service.  He was so successful that Best Buy bought his company and scaled it nationwide in their retail box stores.

It is very safe to say that the service levels delivered by the Geek Squad today pale in comparison to the levels that were delivered by that small Minnesota company before it was purchased.

I have spent many sleepless nights lying in bed wondering if the natural tendency for lower service levels as a company grows was inescapable.

The answers to most complex questions are surprisingly simple.  The answer to my service questions started to appear while I was waiting for a bus to Disney Worlds from the Orlando airport.

False Comfort on a Musty Bus

magic_expressMy wife and I had paid nearly $5,000 for a 9-day Disney resort package that included just about everything.  Part of this package was complementary transportation from the Orlando Airport to the Wilderness Lodge Resort where we would be staying.

When we got off the plane we walked to the departure point for the "Magical Express" bus transport to Wilderness Lodge.

We rounded a corner to see the longest rope line maze I have ever seen.  The ropes were designed to route large numbers of people to the bus for their appropriate resort.

It was 84 degrees in this outdoor maze.  84 degrees is normal for Orlando right now, but as a guy who just left 50 degree Nebraska a few hours ago, it seemed excessively warm.

We waited in the heated rope maze for about 45 minutes with for our bus to arrive.  The line moved quickly into the bus as the drivers stowed our luggage and stroller under the vehicle.

We climbed on the bus silently thanking God for the air conditioning that was sure to greet us, only to be hit smack in the face with that musty old air conditioner smell that can never be evicted from a vehicle once it gets a hold.

My first impressions of my Disney experience was that it had not been very magical.

When we got off the bus the driver started unloading the luggage and our $200 stroller got caught on something in the cargo compartment.  The driver lurched the stroller out, bending its frame and leaving us with a stroller that for 9 days continually wanted to turn left.

Some people would have been disappointed by that initial experience, but I actually found it reassuring.  With all of the money and resources that Disney has, this is the best first impression they could muster.  I was saddened that the relationship between growth and service levels was unavoidable, but with that question answered at the moment, I could finally relax and accept my fate.

Bureaucracy of Walking a Disney Dog

bolt2After that initial low point, another inevitable service rule made its appearance silently.  Good service is never noticed.  When an organization has good service everything goes as expected, customers are satisfied, and everyone walks away happy. (Note that exceptional service is often noticed and called good service by mistake)

Good service is like air - you don't notice it until it is gone.  Take this example:

My son desperately wanted to meet Bolt, the super dog form the 2008 Disney movie, Bolt.  Bolt was a person in a Dog costume who poses for pictures with kids.

It was 5:00 and the Disney "Cast Member" (as they are called) informed us that Bolt would be posing until 7:00.  The line was long, but we thought we could make it through the line in 2 hours.  My son was VERY excited.

At 6:00 we were next to get our picture taken when the Cast Member handling Bolt roped off the line right in front of us. I assumed the poor guy in the dog suit needed a break, so I asked the handler when Bolt would be coming back.  She informed us that he would not be coming back until tomorrow.

My anxiety level went through the roof and I told the handler that she might want to communicate that to the guy outside who told every person in this line (there was a significant line behind me) that Bolt would be here until 7 PM.  Her response sent my temper through the roof and for the first and only time while I was on vacation.

She said:

I don't know who that would be...  I don't even know what department that would be.

With that she walked bolt out the door.

I was white hot mad.  My son was crying.  I looked for a supervisor to communicate my disappointment to.  There was not one that could be found.  That was the end of it.  I was left to return to our room angry, upset, frustrated, and disappointed while at the same time trying to console a 2 year old who just didn't understand.

At that moment it hit me like a brick wall.  There are only three kinds of service in the world.  I had just experienced bad service and I didn't like it.  The other types are good service and exceptional service.

After I had calmed down a bit I thought, I wonder if we had ever sent a customer away from Schrock feeling like I just felt.  In that moment I resolved that that I would do everything in my power to make sure that no customer ever leaves Schrock with a bad service experience.

Recharged and Repurposed

I love to work.  I love to be productive.  In the past I never understood why people had to take a vacation to regain insight and "recharge their batteries."  I understand that now, and in the last week I have been more focused, productive, and effective than I have ever been in my life.

The funny thing is I owe it all to that Disney Cast Member who took the time to show me what bad service FELT like.  I hope she understands when I say thank you, but I hope I never have to meet you again.

I know some people reading this just said virtu-what?  In English, Microsoft has announced that in Windows 7 you will actually be able to run Windows XP as a program - just like you would run Internet Explorer or Microsoft Word.

The Windows XP Virtualization will be available in Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate only - lower versions will not support the feature.

To use XP Virtualization you will have to download it from the Microsoft website and have a processor that supports virtualization.  Instructions on finding out if your computer will support virtualization, see this post from the ZDNet website.

But before you start popping campaign corks and dig out your old software there are some limitations to the virtualization technology.

Productivity software like old versions of Corel Word Perfect will run in the virtualized XP enviornment, but 3D games like legacy copies of Doom will not.  Additionally, any older software that requires legacy hardware will not work.  Your old analog TV Tuner will have to stay in the scrap heap for now!

According to a post on the popular technology website ZDNet, Microsoft is continuing to work their under promise and over deliver campaign regarding the release date of the much anticipated Windows 7 Operating System.

According to the website:

According to a December posting on the Tech ARP site, Windows Vista PCs must be purchased by end users … between July 1, 2009 through TBD (to be determined)” to qualify for the Windows 7 Tech Guarantee program. The wording notes that “OEMs may choose to offer a shorter program period within the allowed date range.”

Windows Vista Home Premium purchasers will get a free upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, the site says. Windows Vista Business users will get an upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. And users who buy PCs running Windows Vista Ultimate starting July 1 will get a free upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.

This is not unlike the upgrade program that was offered by many PC manufacturers to avoid the problem that always plagued OEM's just before the release of Windows Vista.  People tend to wait for the new OS rather than continuing to buy PCs as they normally would.  The end result is an unnaturally slow quarter for manufacturers followed by a massive next quarter.  The upgrade offer tends to smooth things out a bit.

It is important to note that manufacturers may choose to extend this offer back even further at their own expense to include users who purchased computers before July 1.

The whispers are that Windows 7 will be released to OEM manufacturers in the 3rd quarter of 2009 so they can have Windows 7 boxes on the shelves for Christmas.  While Microsoft will not "officially" make that promise, they would be foolish to miss the holiday season with such an anticipated release in my opinion.

I tend to welcome my employees unofficially on my blog once they have worked for us for a few weeks and we know they are the real deal.

In fact, it's almost an inside joke among Schrock's employees that once you make it on Thor's blog you know you are good to go.

If that's the case, then I am happy to report that Schrock's newest employee, Scott Long, is good to go.  Scott will be taking on a management role in the Lincoln Service Center.

Scott brings an official Apple certification to Schrock as well as additional HP and Dell certifications.  Anyone who has been through the certification process for these three companies understands the training and experience required to gain these certifications.  His presence in the service center will help us keep our turnaround times to same-day or next day.

The fist week that Scott was on the job he negotiated better rates on our office printing solutions, immediately jumped in offering "Schrock Style" service to customers in the service center, and managed our work flow to get our customers' computers off the bench and back in their hands quickly.

Most importantly, the addition of Scott has allowed me to take a much-needed vacation with my wife and son in Disney World, so that may have accelerated this "good-to-go" post as well.  :-)

When we were planning the new Schrock Innovations Lincoln Service Center we knew we needed a solution for displaying inventory and we were going to need a two-placement point of purchase reception desk.

What I didn't know was that we could get all of that from the same company that was doing our custom flooring.

Todd Rose Decorative Concrete is an up-and-coming company on the national design scene.  We called on Todd and his team to create a custom concrete flooring solution for us, and in passing I mentioned how difficult it was to find a hip, unique counter and furniture solution.

Todd suggested we look at concrete.  He drew us up a plan and the rest is history.  Take a look at what Todd Rose and his team were able to do for us!

funfridaysDo you still have that old computer of yours from the early 90's?  Statistics show that there are enough computers in storage in the U.S. to provide every man, woman, and child with three computers each!

So how can you get rid of your old worn out computer?  What do you do when you  decide to upgrade?  Here are Frequently Asked Questions about computer recycling.

FAQ #1: REUSE AND RECYCLE

I've heard of REUSE and RECYCLE, but how do I go about doing those things?

If your computer is less than 4 years old and works properly, there is a good chance that someone else out there might get some good use out of it.

In many cases you can donate your complete (i.e. including a keyboard, mouse, and monitor) to a local charity or thrift store.  This way, you are not tossing your old computer away and someone else can get some use out of it.

But before you jump in your Prius and head to the Goodwill, you might want to call ahead first.  As awareness of E-waste laws has increased, many charities have stopped taking donated computers because the cost of disposing of them is too high.

If no thrift stores in your area will take your computer consider approaching your church or a local shelter instead.  Be sure to get a receipt for tax purposes.

There are many companies that recycle computer components by shredding them and then melting them down for base materials taht are then sold to others for use in new electronics.  Nation wide recyclers recover more than 100 million pounds of material over a year.

Unfortunately, it will cost you anywhere between $.30 and $.70 a pound to have your system recycled.  Alternatively, Schrock Innovations recycles computer towers, keyboards, mice and accessories for free and only has a nominal charge to handle monitors.

FAQ #2: How do I protect my privacy?

You will need to make sure that your personal information has been permanently deleted from your hard drive.  Simply deleting your personal files off the computer before tossing it out is not enough.  Any experienced company with data recovery equipment can recover data from a hard drive that has not been professionally erased.

A good way to ensure this is to take to a computer store (such as Schrock Innovations) to have them zero your hard drive.  Zeroing a hard drive permanently removes your personal files, internet history, passwords and cookies.

FAQ #3: Is it possible to buy a "green" computer?

Yes, but those computers are not necessarily known as "green" computers. You can purchase a computer that is built form recycled parts for example, but these computers tend to have a greater liklihood of failure or warranty repair.

A safer bet is to buy components from manufacturers that contain fewer toxins, have an energy star label and are shipped in as little packaging as possible.

FAQ #4: Does my computer manufacturer have a recycling program?

Yes, many manufacturers now participate in recycling programs. Call or check out your manufactures website.  Additionally, Best Buy now recycles computers at all of their retail locations.  However, before they will take your computer they require you to remove your own hard drive because they do not want to be responsible for the loss of your improperly erased data.

FAQ #5: Does Schrock Innovations recycle computers?

Absolutely. Stop by the store and drop it off, we will do the rest.  There is no charge for recycling computer equipment, except for a $15 charge per monitor.

Fundamental Fact: Only 10% of computers are recycled in the US. Which means that when your computer is trashed in the landfill, chemicals, lead and other heavy metals are being leaked into groundwater.

adobelogo-full1Yesterday ZDNet reported that a new exploit was published that uses Adobe's widely distributed free Acrobat Reader program.

While there are no reports of viruses taking advantage of this exploit yet, sample code has been published online that is often a precursor to B-class virus attacks.

I strongly recommend that you download any available updates for your Adobe Reader program.  You may have to manually install these updates or the Adobe updater may pop up in the lower right corner of your screen telling you that updates are available.

To manually install updates:

  1. Open your Adobe Acrobat Reader program
  2. Left click on the Help menu
  3. Left click on the Check for Updates selection

magic-kingdom-addressOver the past three months I have opened a new Lincoln Service Center, hired and trained 5 new technicians, installed a new in-shop manager, hired a communication coordinator, and launched two of the most successful sales in Schrock Innovations' history.

With that said, I could not have done any of these things without the daily support, assistance, and love of my wife Kim.  Getting all of this done came at the expense of many days and nights at home with my family.  It's time for a little catch up time, and what could be better than going to Disney World in Orlando Florida!

This is an all-play-no-work vacation. We are going to stay in the park at the Wilderness Ridge resort, so we won't be interrupted by any conferences ;-)

Seems that my buddy Ken McArthur is still trying to track me down. He actually had the guts to schedule HIS conference AT Disney World WHEN I would be there and then offered me free tickets.

LOL... Ken my wife says NO WORK!

Most of us have enjoyed one too many adult beverages at some point or another.

One of my customers forwarded me an email that my wife and I both found hilarious.  Normally I don't re-forward things, let alone post them on my blog, but I am making an exception for this one. Enjoy!

Jack wakes up with a huge hangover after attending his company's Christmas Party. Jack is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn't taste like alcohol at all. He didn't even remember how he got home from the party.  As bad as he was feeling, he wondered if he did something wrong.

Jack had to force himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table. And, next to them, a single red rose!

Jack sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house.

He takes the aspirins, cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror. Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick:

'Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to get groceries to make you your favorite dinner tonight.  I love you, darling! Love, Jillian'

He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee and the morning newspaper. His son is also at the table, eating.

Jack asks, 'Son... what happened last night?'

'Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door '

Confused, he asked his son, 'So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me??'

His son replies, 'Oh THAT!... Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you screamed, 'Leave me alone, I'm married!!'

Thor Schrock

MATT MILLER/THE WORLD-HERALD

In the Money section of today's Omaha World Herald Schrock Innovations was featured as a "business makeover".  After our recent improvements to our Lincoln Service Center, our Omaha location is paling in comparison and I know we need to do something about it.

We have a set of plans in place for it, but when Stephanie Monge offered me the opportunity to sit down with not just one, but a team of consultants about our plans I could not pass it up.  Here is the article as it appeared in the paper today:

Thor Schrock started Schrock Innovations, a computer repair and Web site design business, in Lincoln in 1999.

He initiated a weekly radio show that provided troubleshooting advice to callers, and his business grew. Schrock wanted to replicate his business model in Omaha and opened an office here in 2003.

The business generated $125,000 in revenue within six months of opening but has been stagnant for the last few years, he said.

The Lincoln location, however, continues to thrive. It moved to new, larger quarters in February and has since hired four new computer technicians.

Schrock wondered how to re-establish his presence in the Omaha market and attract more customers to that location. The Omaha store doesn't even have a sign, he said.

Cliff Mosteller, director of the Nebraska Business Development Center's EntrepreneurShop in Omaha, said Schrock has a successful track record and a strong reputation in Lincoln. Schrock Innovations has been deemed the No. 1 independent computer repair company for several consecutive years, he said.

Mosteller said that he should leverage that success in reintroducing his business in Omaha.

Schrock has a knack for helping customers understand and work through their computer repairs, Mosteller said.

During difficult economic times it is important to use marketing techniques that have proved successful in the Lincoln market, Mosteller said. He said investing in new, unproven strategies might not be the best use of scarce marketing dollars.

Schrock shouldn't target consumers for whom price is the most important factor, Mosteller said, because those people probably will shop at large retailers. The business's target audience is those people willing to pay a little more for an extra level of service, he said.

Schrock should use marketing techniques that accentuate his passion for the business and his company pride. Mosteller's suggestions include speaking engagements, use of social media and free workshops for children and senior citizens.

Such efforts would be more time intensive, Mosteller said, but would help build trust and rapport between the business and potential customers.

Mosteller said that Schrock has invested nearly $70,000 in equipment and training to establish the only certified computer data recovery facility within 300 miles of Omaha. The technical term for the facility is "class-100 data recovery cleanroom."

Mosteller said Schrock could open a new market in retrieving sensitive data by registering with the NBDC Procurement Technical Assistance program. The program assists businesses in marketing to all levels of government and obtaining federal, state and local government contracts.

The company also should modify its Web site to make it easier to navigate, so customers can find information more quickly. Mosteller said the company should make forms available online for customers to schedule pickup or drop-off of their computers.

In addition, Mosteller said, Schrock Innovations should promote its ability to provide factory-authorized service on most brands of computers. That is another way to differentiate the business from the big computer stores that generally must ship damaged computers back to the factory.

Schrock has an excellent track record for customer service, which it should emphasize during a recession and in its efforts to revive the Omaha store, Mosteller said.

Mosteller said Schrock and his wife should alternate between the Omaha and Lincoln locations in order to spread their expertise beyond one location.

"His model has proven successful," Mosteller said. "So stick with it."

I really appreciated Cliff's input, as well as the input from his team and we will be using some of the specific suggestions (that did not appear in the story) to regain a dominant foothold in the Omaha market.

Some of the specific items that Cliff suggested to us in our meeting were:

  • Use marketing techniques that have proved successful in the Lincoln market.
  • Promote No. 1 ranking in the "Best of Lincoln" annual survey in marketing materials.
  • Reach out to the community by, for example, speaking to community groups and offering free computer workshops.
  • Divide time between the Omaha and Lincoln locations.
  • Make the Web site easier to navigate.
  • Allow customers to schedule pickup and drop-off of their computers via the Web site.
  • Market services of the data recovery cleanroom with local, state and federal governments.
  • Promote the ability to provide factory-authorized service on almost every brand of computer.
  • Tell new Omaha customers, "If you are not satisfied with our service, call Thor Schrock. If you are satisfied with our service, call a friend."
